The Calendar Imperium
A recurring point of frustration amoung Chroniclers was the struggle to accurately record the amount of time which had passed between significant events. Classifying by days, moons, and years only got them so far and without a formal system in place different recorders varied on when events proportedly happened. Thus it was decided that an official calendar would be created, and its use standardized by Chroniclers in all corners of the Imperium.
History
The Battle of the Miridian Mountains, where the last of the giants were slain, was chosen as the demarkation between the Mortal Age and the Giant Age. However since this decision was not made until several centuries after the battle, dates around and especially before it tend to be a bit fuzzy. This system of counting years before and after the battle was used until the reemergence of Aurilex the Gold into his draconic form and the subsequent rise of the Elder Dragons back to prominence. It was decided that this shift in the overall dynamic of the world was significant enough to merit the title of a new age, the Dragon Age. Now years are counted forward from the beginning of the Dragon Age, noted as "DA," or Before the Dragon Age, "BDA."
Components and tools
Each year is divided into twelve thirty-day months, called "moons," giving a three hundred and sixty day cycle. A clever observer will note that this is, in fact, why scholars chose to subdivide a circle into three hundred and sixty degrees for the purposes of their calculations. These months correspond to the waxing and waning of the moon, Stellara, supposed daughter of Umbra and Aurora. Each of the months is named after an Elder Dragon, with the additions of Umbra and Aurora as their creators (and to round the number out to twelve). The year begins the day after the shortest day of the year, the Umbral Solstice, with its midpoint at the longest day, the Auroran Solstice. The year is also divided into its Blessed and Cursed halves, representing the times of longer and shorter days, respectively. The lighter season begins with the Spring on the Blessed Equinox and the darker season begins with the Autumn on the Cursed Equinox.
