The Black Knight
While it is certainly common from time to time that an aspiring warrior clad in dark armor will style themselves as a black knight, they will never truly be The Black Knight. That title belongs to the personal bodyguard of the Dukes of Silverspire, heads of House Pointe. Silent, stoic, and ever vigilant, the Black Knight is like a shadow for Duchess Selena, always looming in a corner like a shadow. Covered head to toe in ornate darkiron armor and wielding a large, starforged greatsword, they certainly give anyone wishing to do the Dutchess harm reason to pause and rethink their life's choices. The Black Knight is not a general, captain, or advisor, they have one task and one task alone: protect the Crown.
The confluence of the Knight's public visibility and the general lack of knowledge around them has naturally generated a number of rumors about both the position and the identity of person behind the helmet. One wild suggestion that can be dismissed offhand is that the Knight is Argostan in humanoid form, using the guise to silently preside over matters of state. This notion cannot possibly be true, as the Black Knight and Argostan have been in the same place at the same time on numerous occasions, with the Silver Dragonlord in both his Champion and full draconic forms. While significant amounts of subterfuge and illusion might be able to pull that trick off, to do so repeatedly without anyone realizing would be exceedingly difficult. Moreover the constant presence of the Black Knight at the Duchess' side would greatly limit Argostan's freedom and mobility, which was one of the primary reasons he selected the Pointes to rule as his regents in the first place. Furthermore it is decidedly unlike the Dragon Blessing of Plenty to hide his presence from his people for any reason.
Perhaps the most believable story is that the Black Knight is a title, rather than a person. Given that the Knight has stood guard over several Dukes and Duchesses of House Pointe, this seems likely as they would otherwise need to be exceptionally old by now. Instead when the time comes for the previous holder of the position to retire some guard or knight of high skill and low station is selected to succeed them. This version, while perfectly plausible on its face, runs into one snag: several aspiring Chroniclers have sought to deduce the identity of the Black Knight by studying the rosters of man-at-arms in the service of House Pointe, but have failed to identify a pattern of fighters who might have been selected for the role, thus suddenly disappearing from regular duty. It is of course possible that the Pointes have doctored the records to protect the Knights' anonymity, but if this is the case they have done so exceedingly well.
Which then leads back to the third hypothesis, one wherein the Black Knight has truly been the same warrior all these years. It is possible they are some elvish warrior who pledged their service to the crown, though the weapon choice and fighting style are decidedly not elven in nature. And if this was the case, why hide the warrior's identity, especially to this great degree of secrecy? It is also possible that there is another member of House Myst in service to the crown. While Lady Selina does not exactly work in the open, her service to Silverspire is certainly not a secret, nor is her vampirism. Could the Black Knight be another exile vampire from House Myst? If so it would only add to the air of danger surrounding them and their charge.
Regardless of who they are behind the mask, the Black Knight is a staple of court life in Silverspire and has fulfilled their charge faithfully and dutifully for years. Their black armor, matching the black banners of House Pointe, stands as a symbol of the crown's power and fortitude. Any who might seek to one day supplant the Pointes must have a plan in place to deal with the Knight first.
