Many captains refuse passage to waterborn, believing their inherent ties to Leviathan will attract the primordial to the ship. Fortunately for Alan, when he was young he found a captain in Babblebrook desperate enough to take him on as a Deep Seer and deckhand at the same time. It turned out the captain was quite fortunate as well for making the call, as not only was the nonsense about attracting danger a load of rubbish, but Alan made for an excellent seaman. He knew how to watch for signs of bad weather and nasty ocean creatures, but could also tie a dozen different knots with his eyes closed, swam stronger and faster than anyone on the ship, and has this useful, if off putting, trick where he can drink seawater and spit back out fresh, clean water instead. The captain kept Alan on until he retired a wealthy man, since which Alan has had no trouble finding work. He has, however, had trouble keeping coins in his pocket. Being made almost entirely of water makes it exceedingly difficult to get drunk, which also happens to be a passion of Alan’s, so most of his wages go to liquor and beer. The rest go to pretty girls in port town houses of ill repute, where he tends to either be quite popular or wholly unwelcome, depending upon the status of his debts. The man shows real potential as a navigator and could easily captain his own ship, if only he could get his act together for long enough to do so.
