The Home of Fae Gods
For generations, Selemene has been trying to expand the Nightsilver Woods. Candoness is protected by the Revtel and Fae Merchant King system. So she started expanding north first.
The problem was that...up north there was the cult of sun fae who used fire magic (and possibly earth) to keep the land inhabitable for their human citizens and thus were worshiped as gods.
Unlike like most Fae, these guys lived well and got a steady stream of magic to be healthy.
Selemene was on a full-on holy war with them for a very long time.
Around the time Marci was young, Selemene finally won that war.
As for the reason why she was suddenly victorious...well...that most likely is a spoiler
When the fae gods died...that land was retaken by nature and is now frigid land of ice devoid of human and fae life...or so they say
