The Ocean

Overview

The vast stretch of water between Dosjorya and the land that the humans originated from. Full of strong currents and dangerous storms that prevent most ocean voyages from surviving.
Characteristics
The ocean is a warm sea along Dosjorya's borders, providing a great deal of humidity and rain for the wet side of Dosjorya's rain shadow. Rapid currents just off shore push boats south along the coast, allowing for northern settlements to bring their goods to Hasenburg easily and for southern settlements to receive goods easily. Not many Dosjoryans own or can afford large enough and powerful enough boats to fight the currents, as such boats, with the known technology, could not navigate Dosjorya's rivers.   Farther off shore, ocean currents shift seaward, pulling unlucky boats too far away from land to be able to return unless they have enough rowers. Any boat that attempts to head this far out employs an Innen with a flying Gendirl who can fly back for help.   Once or twice a generation, a large wind storm comes ashore from the ocean, typically from the south west. These storms have enough power to destroy wooden structures and crumbling stone structures near its center and bend over numerous trees through its entire swath. Older Dosjoryans who have endured one or more of these storms have learned to recognize the unusual cloud behavior hours before the winds pick up to dangerous levels, and warn others to find shelter.   Sea breezes from the ocean only provide refreshing temperatures a small distance on land, but they produce rainy conditions nearly every day in the warm months. Old Gendirl stories state that the gods fly over the ocean every day, producing a spray that floats to land and creates rain showers.
Favorable Currents
The expedition that sent thousands of Iksen people, the ancestors of Dosjoryans, chanced upon an unusual period of favorable ocean currents, allowing them to cross the entirety of the sea without trouble. This period was brief, for trailing ships set to be sent months after them never arrived.   Another such break occurred thousands of years later in modern times, when the Dargonians were exiled from the land for previous violent conquests. By luck again, they ran into a long period of favorable currents, allowing the entire fleet of ships carrying their people to land successfully in Dosjorya. This break may have been caused or sustained by the God of Speed altering wind currents, thus altering ocean currents.
