Wyverns

A draconic species known for its speed and agility in flight, wyverns often make up the core of a military's aerial forces.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Wyverns are comparative in size to a large horse, making them excellent for riding soldiers.   The have strong hind legs with sharp claws on their feet for finding footing when perching themselves in trees or on rocks. In place of arms, they have scaled, leathery wings with taloned digits at the end similar to those of bats.   Their head is best described as a mixture of reptilian and avian features. They are scaled like the rest of their body with a pair of small horns on the top. In place of snout, wyverns have hard beaks for their mouth and nose.

Genetics and Reproduction

Wyverns are oviparous, with mothers nesting and protecting their eggs for about two weeks between laying and hatching them.

Ecology and Habitats

In the wild, wyverns are usually found in mountainous forested regions.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Wyverns are carnivores and require a significant amount of meat with domesticated wyverns going through an approximate average of 15 pounds of food each day.

Behaviour

Wyverns in the wild are fiercely territorial and will attack at the slightest provocation in defense of its home.   Trained wyverns are known to be loyal and obedient to their master. While this is a boon for military roles, it becomes a complication should a soldier fall in battle and its wyvern need to be paired with a new rider.
