Kitsune

A sub-species of Beastkin  with fox-like features hailing from the Eastern Isles of Dormelia.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kitsune typically have lithe, dexterous bodies with tall fox ears on the top of their head and at least one long foxtail extending from their lower back. The number of tails a kitsune has varies depending on their magical aptitude with one tail indicating a fairly low aptitude while a full nine tails signifies exceedingly high magical prowess.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

In place of human-like ears on the side of their heads, kitsune possess fox ears that stick up on top with fur blending into their hair.    Their faces resemble humans mixed with vulpine features such as pronounced canine teeth and a black snout-like nose.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Kitsune historically hail from the Eastern Isles, though they can occasionally be found amongst other Beastkin communities as merchants and other travelers have ventured beyond their islands.

Average Intelligence

Kitsune are regarded as possessing above average intelligence and sharp minds. Anyone who has encountered a fox merchant will agree that their reputation is not unearned.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Kitsune posses heightened auditory and olfactory senses as is normal for Beastkin.    What sets kitsune apart is their above average aptitude for magic, specifically fire and illusion disciplines. A kitsune's potential is usually measured by the number of tails they possess. One tail is seen to indicate a relatively low aptitude while a full nine tails is a mark of exceedingly high potential.    Despite the emphasis placed on the count of one's tails, though, it is not a hard and fast rule gauging a kitsune's magical ability. Should a kitsune study and train enough, even a single tail can become a respected mage. Conversely, should a nine tails rest on their laurels and forego their training, they will in all likeliness fall behind and be surpassed by lesser tails.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Most kitsune would describe their ideal spouse as physical fit, well groomed, and good humored.

Common Etiquette Rules

Be it amongst friends, family, or even strangers, kitsune are known to present themselves as polite and playful people as a show of amicability. Conversations with a fox often included forms of light teasing or even some mild practical jokes depending on the occasion. Malice is rarely meant with such behavior and most kitsune will gladly accept responses in kind and enjoy the back and forth.

Common Taboos

While mischievous teasing and jokes are seen as acceptable and even expected by some, malicious trickery is looked down on and considered a serious offense.    For example, a kitsune merchant may use wit or charm to sell their wares, but lying or using illusion magic to outright deceive their client is forbidden and seen as a crime.

A kitsune's hair and fur range from blonde, auburn, brown, to black.    Some have speculated that the color of a kitsune's fur holds some indication of whether they lean more towards fire or illusion magic, though little evidence supports this theory.
