Crux Research and Development Institute

The Crux Research and Development Institute CRDI is the organization responsible for the development of mass produced Crux designs for the Armed forces of Domeris. Although the Domerian Crux mass production program was years behind the Lorandian one when the institute was founded, Domeris was able to leverage its position as the birthplace of Crux shaping to rapidly catch up to the Lorandian development program.   The CRDI employs thousands of Crux shapers and scientists, and is currently focused on the development of the Type-25 “Jackdaw” rifle Crux, the first serious contender for a mass produced Crux based on a firearm in the world. Progress is rapid, but structural issues within the CRDI threaten to break the institute before the project is completed.

Structure

While theoretically the CRDI operates as a unified organization under the Armed Forces of Domeris with research facilities across every region of Domeris, in practice it resembles 6 different organizations that begrudgingly answer to the main research department located in Darchen  As the powers granted to the Regional Generals of Domeris grew, so too did their interest in the research departments within their assigned regions. This was not considered a problem at first, Crux development was an important part of overall military research and development and the Regional Generals were expected to keep themselves up to date on the latest developments. But over time curiosity turned to interference, with each Regional General asserting more and more control over the departments within their territory.    Thus the current structure of the CRDI. Each regional department has been thoroughly subverted by the Regional General who oversees it, and their projects are increasingly dictated by the whims of the various regional generals. Only the tireless work of General Philip Jung has managed to keep research somewhat on track. But efficiency has been decreasing as the Generals assign more and more resources to their pet projects, especially as recordings of the so called midnight phenomenon, a series of Crux recordings that seemingly drive all who listen to them into a murderous rage, were recovered.   The current state of the regional departments is as follows:   The Aronican Branch under General Hella Brant is working on project PROMINENCE, a project aimed at studying the effects of controlled Midnight Phenomenon exposure on Crux durability and efficiency. The recovery of Sibylle Luden was the primary impetus for the start of this project, and Crux Squadron "Spearhead" was created in part to observe her Crux performance in combat situations.    General Meike oversees project MAGPIE, which is primarily concerned with the development of a non-crux based projection vector for the midnight recording. The midnight phenomenon is most effective when non-crux users are exposed to it, but its nature as a Crux recording prevents its from being transmitted in any way other than through the metal echo of a Crux. Project MAGPIE aims to translate the recording into a suitable format for transmission at enemy positions. While the project has had somewhat of a start and stop nature over the years, recent developments in the field of electromagnetic wave detection have given a ray of hope
