Darchen

Darchen is the capital of Domeris, and it is at once two cities in the minds of it's inhabitants. Darchen was once known as the Capital of the Domerian Romance. An artistic period that started around the same time as the United Republics of Lorand sprung into being. Domerian Romance emphasized the chivalric past of Domeris, and featured dashing aristocratic noble heroes. These heroes often faced against the forces of modernity, clashing with industrial barons and military reformers keen to sideline the noble Crux knights in favor of foreign military concepts. The knight would always triumph of course, as tradition would triumph against the forces of modernity. Domerian Romance was never popular with the lower classes, it was written by aristocrats for aristocrats, and Darchen was their holy ground. A glittering temple to tradition, composed of glittering palaces and towering noble estates supported by the labors of an impoverished workforce. Darchen was the city of Cruxes and flowers, of duels and jousts in the sky. Darchen is a city of smog, a city of sword and steel. Only the royal palace remains, though it is covered in smog. The rest was bulldozed on the orders of Doran Regnar, the land sized in the name of the state. Factories and tenements have replaced the noble estates, and flowers find little purchase in the cities polluted soil. But economic growth has brought prosperity, and the common family living in Darchen is many times richer now than it was a decade ago. Investments in public education and infrastructure has sharply risen, and the majority of Darchens common inhabitants have only seen their lot improve during Darchens transformation. Darchen represents all the evils of Dorans regime to the former aristocrats of Domeris, an edifice dedicated to the crushing of all that is noble and just by the uncompromising powers of modernity. But to the common people, Darchen represents the destruction of the old hierarchies, it represents renewed economic growth and social progress and the coming glory of tomorrow.
