Wachter's Trunk of Bones
A trunk of bones which had been kept in the closet of the master bedroom at Wachterhaus.
When the chest was opened by Krysis she was immune to the sleep effect, but Tempeste was not. The puff of dust and smoke temporarily knocked out Tempeste. She had multiple dreams which appeared to be memories of the person whose remains were stored within. A scene engaged in a hunt in the woods. Another scene at Castle Ravenloft with a young woman who bears resemblance to a youthful Fiona Wachter in a passionate embrace interupted by a stern older man who was certainly Strahd von Zarovich and a younger man with a family resemblance. A third scene where the young woman offered him a soothing cup of tea lulling him into a peaceful sleep.
The party found the diary of Lovina Wachter in Das Anwesen which detailed the origin and importance of the trunk. After Lovina Wachter poisoned her lover which Tempeste witnessed as a memory a black carriage arrived and took his body. Several months later Lovina Wachter was raised to the court of Ravenloft as Lady Wachter. Per the diary, "You have secured your place in the Royal Court by slaying your lover. The cursed remains of your beloved are imprisoned within the chest, denied both burial and resurrection. They shall remain in your possession, a testament to the sacrafice you have made in service to your Lord and Master. As a member of the Royal Court you and your descendants, for all eternity, bear the responsibility of surveilling those who defy Ravenloft and your Lord and Master." The party stole the trunk from Wachterhaus before the Izek and the city guard swept the house for valuables.
