Sharmús
Sharmús (Primordial: lit. 'water columns') are several arcane devices built near water wells and oases throughout the Balar Desert intended to indicate nearby sources of fresh water to desert travelers. These devices use the power of refined thaumium crystals to create a magical beam of light several thousand feet into the sky, which can be seen from miles around during both the daytime and at night.
The devices were commissioned for construction in 205 ME by the Balar prince Nahdi III as part of a broader effort to re-establish trade routes between the Balar and the Quorel'hrim Kingdom. Bandits have been known to target these devices in order to steal the valuable thaumium crystals which power them. It is unknown if there is a limit to how long the thaumium crystals can power the devices; those currently in operation have been running continuously since their construction.
