D-Day Memorial Site
The D-Day Memorial Site, situated in East Park in Cape St. Joan is the city's largest memorial to the victims of "D-Day".
Purpose / Function
Built in 2019 after cleanup and reconstruction in East Park had concluded, it servers as a memorial to the over 2000 victims of D-Day.
An annual memorial service is held here on every 3rd of August.
Architecture
The memorial consists of a circular concrete pillar on equally circular surface of stone covered by glass on steel frames. The pillar is painted in pure white and "breaks off" at about seven metres of height.
On the surface surrounding the pillar, in concentric lines around it, the names of all the victims of D-Day and the series of attacks leading up to it have been engraved. It lists both civilians and law enforcement who gave their life in the attempt to capture Jane Doe. The names of supers are listed under their super names, except for the rogues whose identity could not be established or permission of surviving family members to reveal it could not be obtained. Otherwise, only the civilian name is listed.
The base of the pillar is usually surrounded by candles and colours. At the edge of the circular surface the pillar rests upon, simple concrete blocks have been placed to serve as benches for passerbys.
An American flag is fluttering in the wind on a flagpole at the side of the memorial.
