The Watch

The Watch has evolved quite a bit over the years. Long ago there were four types of police forces within the city of Ankh-Morpork: the Palace Guard, the Cable Street Particulars, the Day Watch and the Night Watch. The first three were eventually dissolved due to one, political issues and, in the case of the latter, redundancy. The guilds had been given the ability to help police the town, which made a number of Watch activities almost useless in comparison. They had little to no power on the streets, and initially this was a part of the plan to keep the city in line. This sort of backfired when the Patrician added racial minorities to the Night Watch's ranks.   The Night Watch simply became The Watch, and its rather cosmopolitan assortment of officers has created a unified front that allows them to work together on the city's problems when they don't ultimately interfere with guild politics. It's headed by Commander Samuel Vimes, also known as the Duke of Ankh, with his two trusted coworkers Captains Carrot Ironfoundersson and Angua von Uberwald.   The Watch continues to recruit new people and currently has roughly 100 officers in its ranks, although there is turnover as they are constantly poached by other neighboring cities. The Watch has a large number of non-humans and first-generation immigrants who join.   More recently there has been a slew of temporary recruits for current investigations into recent disappearances. As is customary, each recruit is given a badge and the rank of Lance-Constable.
