Ankh-Morpork

One of the oldest and largest surviving cities on the Disk, Ankh-Morpork rests within the Sto Plains region. It is sprawled across the River Ankh with a population of about one million, and is technically comprised of two city areas on either side of the Ankh. It is the major trade center for the Circle Sea area and known for industries such as wizardry, assassination, and banking.   The city grew up around the Unseen University, which has been present for most of the region's history. Although, the magical institution makes keeping track more difficult due to the effects magic can have on causality. The region began with the Empire of the Kings of Ankh roughly 3300 years ago and lasted about 1300 years. A century before its end brought about the estimated founding of the University itself.   After the Empire fell, the region saw seventeen centuries of Ankh-Morporkian kings. In this period the crown belonged to whomever had the largest armies to take it. This was an incredibly turbulent time with constant battles over who should rule the area, betrayals and assassinations. There was no known connection between these monarchs and the rulers of the previous Empire, although a tradition similar old Arthurian legend did crop up an enthusiasm for "true swords" for the True King. This ended in 1688, during the Civil War.   The Governing system in place today is more of an arrangement than an actual government. The Patrician is the head of state, who is effectively a dictator. Anyone who can best him would be able to take control of the city, although Patricians are known for the guile cunning and underhanded deals to protect themselves and to keep the populace in line.   The current Patrician is Lord Havelock Vetinari, who installed an agreement with the guilds in order to keep them in line. If there was to be crime, it would be organized. Any freelancing outside of the guilds is not accepted, and guilds have governing powers to this effect. If a guild plays by the rules they will be allowed to continue operating, otherwise action might be taken against them.   All in all, the people don't generally like the Patrician, but he is effective in maintaining order and stability, which is better than the chaos that would erupt if someone were to attempt to take his place.
