Welcome to the island of Dimfell. A land of monsters and magic, where heroes and adventurers alike come together to form companies known as guilds. Guilds fall into countless roles in our society to provide a myriad of services. Many slay the ravenous and dangerous beasts of the lands to provide safety for towns and cities. Some are seekers of knowledge, and use their skills to advance our use of magic and technology. Fewer yet still, are the elites, a grand council of guilds that governs the conduct of smaller organizations and punishes those who go against the Law. Yet each guild has a more profound purpose, Fall Shards. To be a guild, the members must possess a Fall Shard. It grants power and protection to those bound to its service. Those with power always seek more, therefore a guilds true purpose is to find more of these remnants of our past. How one uses the power though, depends on the guild. The origin of the Shards is the stuff of legends. A past so far removed and wrought with calamity that none can say with certainty where the Shards truly came from. You may find yourself asking “what exactly is a Shard?” The answer to that question is a bit too complex for current reasoning. The largest of the Shards are sentient and can project a visible and physical presence. The major cities that we have today arose around those sentient Shards that granted protection. It is unknown what power if any controls the Shards, as they seem to act upon their own whims. The City Shards owe allegiance to no one person or organization, and they grant their powers to their City Defenders alone. The first City Defenders were the prototype for the guilds of today. The Shard gave power and direction. The Defenders in turn provided protection to the Shard and the other people. Guilds of today require two things to form. First, they need a Shard. Second, they need a master. In this day and age the vast majority of Shards located are small things. Our understanding of Shards has changed to include any object, pre-calamity, that can bestow power. If a new Shard is found, its secrets must be revealed in order for it to grant power. When such power is given to an individual, they may choose to form a guild and become Master. The Shard provides power while the Guild Master provides direction and purpose. When a guild has been established for an extended length of time, then the current Master may wish to pass on their title. This can be done, with the current master teaching the next master how to use the Shard to its fullest extent. Thus the guilds of today may continue on into the future, collecting Shards and spreading their influence across Dimfell.
