Timeline Breakdown

Mordeus Cataclysm : 300,000

The Djinn god of magic realises he can worship himself, effectively becoming infinitely powerful. The other gods rally against this threat and brutally kill him. A massive magical explosion permenently burns the Djinn peoples, and drop the world into what is effectively a magical nuclear winter.   Giants fragment, a group head southward eventually becoming the Dwarves. A branch of these get ensnared by the Aboleth, mentally broken becoming the Duergar.

Old Lizardmen Empires : 3300BC - Human / Elven Emergence

First evidence of the earliest cities around the inland sea. Northern Humans (N Humans), Southern Humans (S Humans) and Elves all create their first major urban centre during this era.   Lizardmen civilization reaches its earliest zenith under the guidance of the divine nagas, but there are some indications that all is not well. They have the Salamanders and Haraka as subject peoples, but dominate them politically.   Leonin, Lamia and Rakshasah hold a little indepent enclave within the Lizardman empire, mostly due to the the Rakshasah power. Leonin and Lamia frequently raid Lizardman territories and it is a very hostile relationship.   Djinn explorers return from the Realm of Fire, arriving in the material world alongside their new Infernal allies.   Giant internal struggle continues

Elven Old Kingdom : 2400BC

Several urban centres are established among the S Humans, N Humans and Elves.   North Humans begin to encroach on Feywild   Elves in particular begin to expand more quickly. Initial   Beginning of the long-running Minotaur conflict with the Ogres   Duergar have appeared, but the bulk of their people remain locked underground with their Aboleth overlord.   Dwarven expansion in the lowlands (early irrigation)   Rakshasa begin to get bored of just pitting cats against each other, so begin to corrupt the Lizardmen Nagas, splitting them into two camps. Spirit Nagas (corrupt) and Guardian Nagas (pure).   Early N Human expansion begins, as they start colonies along the coast   S Human expansion more focused along the rivers as they have more natural paths to expand   Boat People Humans (B Humans) come to the stage. They are more spread out and rural with little to no central power. They are experienced sailors however, using their water craft to rapidly take over the fen-like marshes. Their southern border becomes heavily fortified against the Troll incursions which intensify throughout this era.   Elves reach the Bronze Age early, discovering eastern deposits which fuels east-ward expansion.   Minotaurs continue their slow subversion of the Ogre realms, enslaving those they conquer fueling rapid growth of their civilization.   Lizardmen civil war. Spirit Nagas Vs the Guardian Nagas. Guardian Nagas win, exiling the Spirit Nagas and their followers, who head north to find a new homeland. A third faction denounce the Nagas entirely and become atheist.   Leonin and Lamia now without Rakshasa influence split, with the Lamia leaving the forest.   Rise of the first Dwarven Empire (Tyrannical) followed by the Three Successor States. Exile of the Tyrants Daughter who led her followers out into the desert, eventually settling at the Ice Oasis. The Lost Sister also departs with her band, heading North.

Boat-Human Migration Period : 1300 - 1196 BC

Mini-Ice Age pushes the giants south into Elven lands. Verbeegs push into the Northern Humans, destroying some kingdoms.   First Castornin cities founded.   Lamia / Haraka wars in full swing, thousands of Haraka captives removed from the jungles to fuel the Lamian slave economy. Conquest reletively easy because the Lamia can make themselves look like Haraka and have infiltrated Haraka leadership at all levels.   Boat Human migration, no-one knows what the cause is, but they move en-mass to the Elven shore and begin pillaging.   Minotaurs complete their conquest of the Ogres, forming a vassal state.   Minotaur-Elven Wars. Elves, already under attack by the Boat Peoples and Hill Giants are suddenly invaded by the Minotaurs and lose ground rapidly, massively over extended.   Dragons do something incredibly bad and wake the Tarrasque (World Wound) up. It goes on a rampage through the innocent Dwarves, and disappears into the sea. Almost certainly magic related.   World Wound Crisis virtually wipes out the Dwarves except for a number of mountain holds which... hold. Dwarven coasts increase in power and prestige as they are not attacked.   Settlement of the Ice Oasis City.   The Lost Sister (Dwarves) found the city at the Aboleth's Lake.

Collapse of the Elven Empire : 1196 - 1054BC

Dwarven Racial Split - Mountain Dwarves and Plain's Dwarves fracture. Desert Dwarves also become their own entity.   Free Ogre uprising and southern migration begins.   Minotaur conquest of the Elves continues, and the Boat Humans enter the war against the Minotaurs.   Atheist Lizardmen fracture into smaller kingdoms. Guardian Lizardmen maintain unity.

Elven Resurgence : 1054 - 740BC

Rapid expansion of the Southern Humans - rise of their religious state.   Plains and Mountain Dwarves expand to old borders. Founding of the new capital city (not yet capital) in the World Wound's nest.   Duergar break free of the Aboleth and migrate south with aid from their Fire Giant allies.   Boat Human realms expand rapidly and the war with the Minotaurs comes to a statemate.   Elven Empire is now down to a single, very metropolitan city state (think Byzantium).   Northern Humans begin their rapid colonization phase and land in the Elven / Boat Human region and Southern Human region.   Forest and Rock Gnomes emerge for the first time, but encounters are still super rare.   Goliath expansion in their valley continues.   First encounters with the Koalinth (but they've been around a while).   Spirit Naga Lizardmen formaly become the Yuan-Ti as they perfect shape shifting.   Lamia Kingdoms begin to fragment and become super competitive.   Gnoll Hordes reach critical mass and begin to consume everything in their path - inciting conflict with the Thri-Keen for the first time.   Emergence of the Drow Empire, with their sudden invasion of the Northern Humans, which they quickly overcome with Sorcerous Magic (humans at this point still have none!).   Atlantis begins to sink, Goblins are the first kicked off and forced to migrate - they arrive in the Western Isles.

The Dark Ages : 740 - 538BC

666 - Super Volcano blows, taking down the Orcish land, and beginning the sinking of that continent. The ash from this event blocks out the sun for many people, allowing the Drow to emerge from the Underdark. This is also seen as a dark omen by the Minotaurs in particular, leading to an extended period of instability and civil war. This also leads to a drop in global temperatures, precipitating another mini ice-age.   Bugbears emerge from their forests where they'd be lurking, watching the Southern Humans and Castornin for decades, and suddenly strike out as a massive horde, sweeping all before them and moving into the now empty settlements. They did not take (many) prisoners.   Bugbear horde is only stalled when the Castornin struck an alliance with the Leonin, exchanging mercenaries for engineers. Leonin agreed, because they were desperate for defencive structures to fortify against increasingly belligerent Lamia and Yuan-ti forces.   Lizardman empires retract significantly due to the generally colder global temperatures.   Salamanders retreat from the salt flats due to intense cold during the nights, making that inhospitable.   Duergar conquest begins, as the Aboleth's long dormant plan is brought to fruition thanks to the darkness. Their goal, implant Aboleths into the other 2 nearby lakes.   Elven Empire falls entirely and is annexed by the Minotaurs. This lasts for around 12 years later the slave revolt led by Elf Spartacus sparks a mass uprising and they reclaim the capital.   Northern Humans and Elves form an alliance, and massive Human armies begin to assist the Elven reconquest.   Meanwhile, Minotaur Empire suffers a severe civil war, where many of the Elven slaves escape and return to the Elven nation, bolstering their numbers further.   Sensing the Minotaur weakness, the Centaurs also begin a major migration.   Northern Humans flee the wild Drow onslought forming a number of colonies around the inner sea. Rise in tensions between Boat Humans and Northern Humans.   Southern Humans - skies darken leading to a widespread famine. The "old" gods are blamed, and a powerful centralised theocracy comes to power.   First contact between Desert Dwarves and Southern Humans

The Iron Age : 537 - 402BC

Peat Wars - The Halflings for the first time develop a small, centralised kingdom based on a new invention, the "Peat Screw" (Archemedes Screw) - this is used to drain the swamp. Trolls are herded into this newly dried patch, and set alight - the trolls not able to regenerate from this damage. Thus some land is literally cleared and made habitable for the small folk. They also discovered if they burned the soil from their drained swamp that a metal residue was left behind - iron.   Drow Wars Vs N. Humans (most end up as tributaries) Vs Goliaths (sparking a northern migration) Vs the Gnomes (who hold the line, Drow struggle due to magic resist and iron) Vs the Wood Elves (Lady of the Lake power holds) Vs Verbeegs (Couldn't do much more, already over extended)   Drow continued their massive expansion conquering most of their neighbours, and it is only a coalition of the Northern Human remnants and the Gnomes who managed to hold them back.   Goliath migration leads to a split, the Low-land Goliaths maintaining a more clan-like identity (think Scottish Highlands), and the High-land Goliaths living on the ice (think Inuit).   Haraka finally falls to the Lamia, however it is just an occupation not an annexation. Lands are still faaaar too rowdy.   Leonin collapse as the cold-blooded races awaken again after the cold-period.   Bugbears continue their rampage   Lost Goblin arrival in the Southern Continent.   Gnolls find new targets (Yuan-ti / Lizardmen)   Elves - Restored much of their former power - Sorcerous magic much like the Drow plays a key role in this. Halflings - Have appeared - Iron Age (Bog Iron) Half-Elves - Established as a buffer state Minotaurs - More beaten up Centaurs - Expanding N. Infernals moved Drow - Expanded and stopped Goliaths - Migration North Humans - Hammered - Colonies expanded Boat Humans - Expansion I. Goblins - Arriving in force as the mass-migrate away from sinking homeland Gnomes - RG 2 + 3 founded, Forest Gnomes continue to expand with 2 new colonies north (flown by Giant Eagle) - Rock Gnomes Iron Age South Humans - Continued Expanding Southern Races - Leonin collapse, Lizardman / Yuan-ti / Lamia recovery, Castornin hold against Bugbears, Bugbears expansion Gnolls - Find Yuan-ti and Lizardman lands Desert Dwarves - Consolidation of Trading Cities Federation (DD7), Consolidation of Ice Oasis Kingdom (DD1) Mountain Dwarves - Fuelled by massive economic growth, population begins growing rapidly too, and they must search for new lands. Plains Dwarves - Supply most of the food needed by the Southern Humans, they trade via the Mountain and Desert Dwarves. Requiring more supply, they also begin to aggressively expand. Hill Giants begin pushing north after the ice receeded

Goblin Alexander : 401 - 321BC

356 - Arrival of Alex the Goblin in these lands. Alex orders all the incoming ships burned on arrival to stop any thought of return. The smoke from the armada darkens the skies for 17 weeks.   350 - Alex unifies the Northern and Island Goblins under his rule. Alex leads the "Northern" Goblins. Southern Goblins have Alex's lieutenants, but do not fare quite as well - stopped by the Western Humans.   350 - 330   Subjagation of the Verbeeg, Hill Giants, Storm Giants, Frost Giants and Fire Giants. Many Goliaths also swayed, other's flee before the horde. Goblins have some degree of control of Giantish peoples (innate charm?).   Massive incursions into the Western Kingdoms, but mass of refugee's bolstering the numbers of the Coastal Kingdoms allows them to stem the tide.   Massive invasion of the Gnomish homelands, Gnomes given option to subjagate of die. Most choose death, and the conquered lands are razed as an example.   341 - RG2 Razed   330 - Fall of the Drow Empire - Split into the Drow Houses.   324 - Alex the Goblin arrives on the Elven borders   324 - Fall of EC4   323 - Fall of EC3   321 - Battle of M6 Vs the Minotaurs is where Alex is finally defeated and killed.   ONLY GOBLINS PAINTED IN. NOTHING ELSE DONE.

OLD Successor Kingdoms : 321 - 261BC

Raze cities Redraw border-nation's borders Remove old kingdom labels within the successors Change North Humans to Western Humans Remember AK is led by an elf - long lived leader! Work out culture of the successor states The rest of the map - Refugee movements! Lots of people shifting around away from the Hordes.   Dwarven Archmages 261 - Rise of the Dwarven Archmages

OLD Perils of Magic : 401 - 204BC

Migrations Undead A - Dwarven Lichlords = South across the Sound to North Africa (first contact!) = Red Island - where they all die   B - D. Dwarves poison the lake to stop the Duergar implanting an aboleth, not realising that these are actually free Duergar that are fleeing the Abobeth influence. Their farms wither and starvation sets in. Necromancers move in and take over. This is *THE* city of the dead.   C - Elven no-mans land. Lots of corpses thanks to lengthy wars, and Elven necromancers happily inhabit. = Westward and lots of competition with other migratory peoples in a reletively empty area   D - Northern Humans desperation against the Drow, Goblins, Feywild and Lycanthropes = Vampires?   E - Southern Human Necromancers, think Sylvania   SH5 - Special case, benevolent lich king. Their power allows them to resist SH1's empire, and provides a regional counter balance. Still alive in 1400.   ****   Magical primessence is trapped in ice, hence the northern rivers are very magical! Also explains Elven magic despite lack of major primessence deposits.   ****   CHANGE NEW NORTH HUMANS TO WEST HUMANS! P. Dwarves, M. Dwarves, D. Dwarves lands done. Ogres done. Humans, Halflings, Aboleths need to be done.         (OLD) 350 - Dwarves discover Arcane Magic PD5 is where it is discovered, the river running through it being a thick, natural source. It flows from the hills of PD8.   340 - Goblins Conquer Hill Giants + Verbeegs   330 - Goblins Conquer NH4   323 - Goblins Conquer NH1, NH2 and NH3   323 - Gnomish / Goblin War   319 - Lizardman Resurgence   302 - Gnomes take NH cities and Halfling Kingdom founded.   261 - First Dwarven Punic War - Rise of the Dwarven Archmages   237 - First Draconic Traders arrive in PD3 - They bring Diamonds   214 - Second Dwarven Punic War - Tyranny of the Dwarven Lichlords   204 - Crusade does a thing!       To Come - (next time stop)   Plains Dwarves, Mountain Dwarves, Tortles, Duergar, Hill Giants, Ogres   Gnolls - Destruction of Leonin homeland (they *love* the Plains and Woods... only ones really capable of taking the Leonin in the plains). Lizardmen should be quite dug in beyond a certain point. Yuan-ti should be strangely resistant (fellow demonic).   Rock Gnomes need to colonise the Dragon Turtle's back   Gnolls Vs Salamanders??!   Boat Humans are totally not screwed by being next to mind controlling Duergar and their Aboleth overlord. Nope. None. Nada.   Hill Giants need to move north Gnomish Emergence + Human Alliance to stop Drow Ogre expansion in the south Move Northern Infernals to Icewind Goblin explosion (mass migration starts here)   Desert Dwarves and Ogres are historical friends - the Mountain Dwarves, however are not!   Guardian Naga Lizardmen, Leonin and Castornin will need to ally to stop Gnolls (but it will be too late for the Leonin heartland)   Later Aboleth Triumvirate - Aboleths implanted to the other 2 nearby lakes by the Duergar - Enslaved the O5 Ogres, and the Free Duergar returned to servitude. Fire Giants also enslaved. Koalinth - Will be eventually replaced by the Hobgoblins after their mass migration, thus pushed to the islands. Orcs will then come in and replace the Koalinth on the islands, effectively ending their reign as an organised power. Leonin, completely dominant over the plains for so long become extremely decadent - and then the gnolls happen and bring them to their knees. Yuan-ti, Lamia, Hobgoblins and possibly Lizardmen will exploit this weakness. Good Duergar Vs Desert Dwarves over the northern outpost - An aboleth is snuck into the lake, and the Desert Dwarves poison the lake to kill it. They, blaming the Good Duergar, kick them out and raze the city.

What is 0 AD?

The Rivening   The rise of arcane magic after its discovery in 350 was rapid, with new types of magic and magical spells being discovered quickly. The spread of magic was equally expeditious due to the very fact that magic could now be taught, and was no longer the sole purview of the gifted.   Practitioners of this craft were known as Thaumaturists, or Mages for short. The delineation of magical schools had not occurred yet, and arcane magic was solely taught from a generalists perspective. Magical study was still expensive, and tended to be jealously guarded by the upper classes, although this of course differed by state.   One of these Thaumaturists, a Southern Human by the name of Nynniow Sherring had become infatuated by the early principles of Vitamancy, or the study of life, a pursuit he took to with gusto through a combination of magic and science. Due to this unique blend of masteries, he became a healer of great renown and people travelled from far and wide to seek his healing touch.   In time he was challenged to heal death itself. This was beyond even his exceptional skills, and defeating this obstacle became an all consuming obsession. In his quest to conquer death, he discovered the River of the Dead, and the fabled of Ocean of Souls which lay beyond. He became convinced that the key to immortality lay in the Ocean of Souls, where if he was able to lock the soul beyond the Fisher's reach, the spirit could never be claimed, and thus that person would never die.   Never afraid to experiment, he developed a ritual he hoped would lock away his own soul, thereby proving the concept. Thus, he made the necessary preparations, and invoked the spell.   The whole world flashed green for an instant, and all heard the piercing scream of pain and anger from somewhere beyond. The spell had worked, his soul now beyond the Fishers reach. The spell did not simply secure his immortality however, it also tore a gaping hole in the veil between the mortal realms and the Ocean of Souls.   All was thrown into chaos as rifts opened all over the world, souls bursting forth to claim nearby corpses, to rise again as the undead, while the demons who followed normally preying on these souls, found new prey among the plentiful mortals.   Thus "The Rivening" had begun.   The Fisher himself had been wounded by the tear, and blinded by pain and rage was not immediately able to act. His loyal Infernals, tasked as always to hunt and destroy the demons, followed their nemesis through the rifts in what became known as the "Infernal Crusade", uncaring to the collateral damage inflicted in the pursuit.   It is not known for how long the Rivening occurred, as time itself seemed to stretch and buckle under the powers at play. Eventually, the Fisher recovered and was able to stitch the tears shut, but even now sometimes the Ocean of Souls bleeds into the mortal realm.   And so it is, that we find ourselves in Zero After Rivening, 0 AR and the start of a new era of Primessence.   This was not all that happened with the Rivening, however, it also awoke a latent power that lay buried deep beneath the sea. Mordessence stirred for the first time since the god's murder.
