Diamond City Daydream

Diamond City is a society teetering on the brink of disaster -- but atleast they're having fun doing it. It was seventy five years ago when the world suddenly ended. At least, it ended for the small coastal island of Diamond City. They lost all contact to the outside world, and the city was overrun with shadowy creatures. At the same time, unique, strong-willed individuals developed the ability to fight against these monsters. Still, the hoards were unceasing. In the face of this insurmountable enemy, the denizens of Diamond City did the only thing they could...they went higher.   The city grew, layer upon layer, reaching toward the sky above, as the lower levels were consumed by darkness. The realm beneath them was quickly dubbed "The Underworld" as many believe hell was quite literally rising up to meet them. The warriors who manifested strange powers to fight them were referred to as Devil Divers, or just Divers for short.   The monsters were more aggressive in the early days. There were no Diving Gates back then. They hadn't discovered a proper means of protection for the people who couldn't defend themselves. More than one, a lower level of the city was lost in one climatic flood of monsters. The people lived, and worked, but they did so in constant fear of brutal death. Even after the development of the first Diving Gate that prevented the incursion of all but the strongest monsters, the people lived half lives, only living to run or die at a moment's notice. People naturally drew hope from the Devil Divers, and eventually they drew entertainment from them as well. The Diver's Almanac recorded monsters kill numbers, diver statistics and made the scary world below suddenly quantifiable. Eventually, the celebrity of the Divers led to the creation of the Crux Games, where off-duty Divers participate in team combat against each other, to hone their skills and give their friends and families something to root for.   Diamond City Daydream copyright 2019 Christopher Rothove
