Aelluin, the Summoner
Aelluin Ethanderel is the most powerful conjuration wizard in Aelderin, and one of the greatest enemies of the Empire of Nara Tok. One of the nine Maea Sundemari, Aelluin was one of Sundemar's foremost followers, and one of the greatest proponents of Sundemar's vision - a continent united under elvish rule. Aelluin is the only member of the Maea Sundemari to remain active after the death of Sundemar and the success of the Vengeance Campaign. He has taken residence in the Volodarian city of Amara, leading the Amaran rebels in their fight against imperial authorities. He played a crucial role in defending the city during the Siege of Amara, and was responsible for the death of General Vraidan Ffandor.
By all accounts, Aelluin is an imposing figure. Tall even for Aoleirians, Aelluin possesses pale, unblemished skin; ebony hair; and eyes of shimmering silver. He is known to favour green and silver robes, and carries a silver-wood staff adorned with an emerald crystal. The Summoner is often described as regal and commanding, and is known to be somewhat demanding of his followers. While not as adept at warfare as some of his fellow Sundemari, Aelluin is renowned for his craftiness and quick-thinking, which facilitated his escape from the Nara peninsula after the Liberation of Nara Tok. Aelluin was one of Sundemar's most loyal and zealous followers, and is known to be exceptionally dismissive of the 'lesser races', especially humans and dwarves.
As with the other Maea Sundemari, Aelluin was already a master of conjuration magic before the resurrection of Sundemar. After the necromancer's rebirth, Aelluin was gifted with ancient knowledge that advanced his powers manifold, making Aelluin the most adept conjuration wizard on the continent. Not only is Aelluin skilled in teleportation magic, and the arts of elemental and physical conjuration, Aelluin also has access to his own personal Realm - a demiplane from the Warring Times that contains creatures from Seaid. Aelluin called on his Realm during the Siege of Amara, and its denizens decimated Ffandor's army. It is unclear how much control Aelluin has over the denizens of his Realm, however, as many escaped into the surrounding wilderness following his use of it.
Aelluin is a scion of Ethanderel, one of the most powerful of the Seaofin houses on the Isle of Aoleir. As a result, we know far more of Aelluin's past than some of the other Sundemari. Aelluin was known to be a master craftsmen, earning much acclaim for his magical constructions, formed from twine and plants. Aelluin rose to the rank of master conjurer in 363 IF, at the age of 214, after defeating his own teacher in a summoner's duel: a contest of magical prowess in which two conjurers employ their powers to summon creatures of stone, wood and organic matter to fight with one another. By 380 IF, Aelluin was considered the foremost conjurer on the Isle.
Aelluin was one of the later additions to the group of masters, who would become the Sundemari. Aelluin joined the group on the advice of his friend, Maenidon, seeking to learn the secrets gathered by the different Seaofin houses. During this period, Aelluin became increasingly convinced that the Aoleirians of the modern day had undergone a great cultural fall. The loss of ancient knowledge, and the abandonment of powerful magicks were unforgivable failures for the master conjurer. Aelluin was one of the first of the masters to embroil themselves in the ancient history of the Aoleirian Empire, a subject generally considered taboo by the high elves. Over the years, Aelluin grew increasingly reverent of the ancient emperor, Sundemar, looking up to him as a paragon of elvenkind. And so, when Zaerdaka first proposed her scheme, to resurrect the legendary necromancer and become his students, Aelluin was quick to establish his support.
During the early years of Thaerseimai, Aelluin remained close to his master, serving for some time as a commander in the Sundemari-Aoleirian Wars. It was during this period that Sundemar granted Aelluin the secret of his Realm, as a reward for his loyalty and his role in the Decimation of Aerdha. After several years of leading, Aelluin was turned to more subtle tasks, serving Sundemar on diplomatic missions across the Heartlands. Aelluin acted as Sundemar's face in the region, while Ezavir, the Whisperer worked behind the scenes, fuelling the Feuding Years and keeping The Senate focussed on unimportant trivialities.
While serving as Sundemar's diplomat, Aelluin was given authority to oversee most of the necromancer's diplomatic exchanges. In 396 IF, Aelluin received a letter from the burgeoning Amaran government: a plea for aid and weapons, in their war against the Empire. After his own investigations, Aelluin became convinced that the southern cult's crusade was a simple extension of his own mission - the establishment of elvish supremacy across the continent. Aelluin convinced his master to accept the Amaran plea, and provide weapons and military training to the Amaran renegades, allowing them to begin their campaign of sabotage and guerrilla warfare.
By 399 IF, the Amarans had seen many successes in the south. As a reward for their work, (and as it later proved, a backdoor for himself), Aelluin ventured into his Realm and bargained for a Daqi seed, from its fae denizens. The Summoner granted the seed to the Amarans, as a gesture of support. This gift proved of deep importance to the Amarans - the ancient Daqi trees, sacred to their goddess Daisha, had not been since since the days of Maknor Wildfyr. The tree was planted in the heart of the city, amid the ruins of the old Vialan parliament, and it grew quickly, becoming the Heart-tree of the city. The tree became a core part of Amaran philosophy - a symbol of their creed, Ilar-i Vad: Rebirth through blood.
Just three years later, disaster struck for the Sundemari. Sundemar's sudden disappearance, and the deaths of several of his most powerful servants during the Liberation of Nara Tok, effectively decapitated their government. Aelluin was in the court of Sucria when he heard the news, and taking no chances, he prepared his escape. A day after Nara Tok's fall, he sent a missive to the Amarans telling them to prepare for his arrival. The next dawn, Aelluin stepped through an arch within the Sucrian gardens, and emerged from the heart of the Daqi tree. Awed and reverent, it took little effort for Aelluin to establish himself as the new leader of the Amaran movement, quietly dispatching those few who stood against him.
Since then, Aelluin has been closely intertwined with the Amaran cult. Known as Naishidor, the Herald of Daisha, or else as the Summoner, Aelluin has become widely accepted as Amar's successor - a second prophet, and the bringer of Daisha's wrath. While in command of the Amaran forces, Aelluin has continued to perpetrate campaigns of sabotage across the south, especially in the city of Astria, the seat of the Qai'din government. This has made him one of the foremost enemies of the new imperial regime, under Emperor Aivo. In 403 IF, the Emperor sent General Vraidan Ffandor to the southern Exarchies, to reign in the rebellions in Kanik and Amara, and reconsolidate his former lands. Ffandor successfully reconquered the Kanik peninsula in just a year, before marching east, towards Amara, recruiting many Volodarians into his host on the way. He reached Amara in the winter of 405 IF, and set the city under siege.
Ffandor was supported by fifty of the most powerful Circle mages on the continent, who, together, were able to outmatch Aelluin's natural conjuration powers. Faced with his own demise, Aelluin called on one last, desperate trick, forming a bridge between his Realm and Dhaernor. Some of the most powerful creatures of Seaid were unleashed into the region surrounding the city, in his defence of Amara: covens of hags; pixies and dryads; nereids and naiads; and murderous recaps. The gathered soldiers and mages were ill-prepared for creatures unseen since the Warring Times, and over the course of several weeks, Ffandor's army was decimated by the denizens of Aelluin's Realm. They targeted the mages first, stripping the army of its best defences, and opening them up to Aelluin's own attacks. A month after the siege had begun, Ffandor was forced to retreat, his forces reduced to just a few thousand men and five wizards. During the retreat Aelluin conjured magical constructs, who harried the fleeing men. Ffandor himself was struck down by a stone golem, and the rest of the army's leadership fled. Only three thousand soldiers escaped the destruction at Amara, the Conquerer of Kanik falling to Aelluin's creations.
Since Ffandor's death, the city of Amara has remained a thorn in the Empire's side. With Aelluin defending them, the cult of Amar is free to continue its operations across the south. The last member of the Maea Sundemari, Aelluin remains the primary enemy of the Empire, but with the powers of his Realm, he seems beyond their reach.
