Hightower is a place, a literal high tower built on a lone flat-topped mountain northeast of Marino. The Hightower family have been its custodians since at least the fifth century, and it’s clear that the name belongs to the place, not to any blood line.
Members of the Hightower family can be found throughout DeVere and beyond, within the Regency and commanding ships of the Royal Navy. Wilem’s younger sister, Gisele Haight-Hightower, is Lord Berona in Caper City.
Wilem Hightower is the master of Hightower Castle, with the rank of Gran Duch (pronounced "Duke"). In 1554 he was second in line for the Marino throne. This was still true at the time of his death in 1567.
After his death, Wilem’s daughter Anna Hightower took charge of her father’s Navy, which was unconventional. Naval divisions are not as a general rule passed on through blood. However, although they are technically a part of the Royal Navy, Hightower’s fleet are wholly financed, owned, and controlled by the Hightower family, and there was no way for the Royals to prevent this inheritance, even if they had tried.
