“If a man loses ten coronets he is a fool, but if he loses ten million, he is a genius.”   Cunning, conniving, mischievous, cowardly. Vitt Garnar is a spoiled noble brat from Ortega, squeezed out of his own family, and now wandering Dearworth in pursuit of wealth and power. Vitt feels he has something to prove to his father and sister in Ortega, although they could not care less about him and simply want him out of their lives.   Vitt ruins nearly everything he touches. Nevertheless, he manages to stay on top, through narcissistic self-aggrandizement and stalwart refusal to acknowledge failure. Inevitably, he has built a small army of willing sycophants who struggle to rub off some of his exaggerated wealth and power.   Vitt is currently embarked on a campaign to possess the riches of Dearworth, through purchasing small banks, and leveraging them to purchase larger banks. He has a unique facility for borrowing money against other money he has already borrowed, fearless of the consequences, and he is creating a house of paper with promise as its brick and greed as its beam.   Vitt Garner owns stately homes in both Tenpin and Alder, but lives mostly aboard his sixty-foot yacht The Ordained. He occasionally reaches back to Ortega for financial support when his schemes crumble. Nevertheless, he refuses to acknowledge defeat, and digs himself out of each hole by creating an even bigger one. In this way he is becoming rather an infamous failure and somehow this attracts more followers.   Vitt is supported by spineless confidence men who believe none of his lies, only that somehow they will profit when his house finally burns. They could not be more wrong about every element of that approach. Somehow no one ever profits by betting against Vitt Garnar.
