Sasyll (“SAZ-ull”) Hollen is an ambitious farm girl from Lewer Cais. She lost both parents and two of three brothers in the dark winter of 1551.
After more than a year following that hard winter, Sasyll pulled herself and her brother Mikael out of despair, and began her own tiny campaign of unifying the lands below Alder. This fight is a personal microcosm of the ongoing campaign for all of Dearworth Valley.
Sasyll believes the Hook River Valley should persist as a unique and independent state, distinct from the rest of Dearworth and far from the grasp of Marino. Her allies gather and conspire in every village and city in the Valley, meeting in the open under the Alder banner, a bunch of blue grapes on a black-and-gold field.
Sasyll’s campaign to unite the region under a single flag is met with some derision, both by the independent families in those smaller towns, and by the noble families of Alder. But Sasyll’s earnestness and kindness have swayed a good number of people to her cause, and many folk in Hook River see no harm in unity.
As part of her campaign, Sasyll is quick to defend the people of Hook River from outside interference, even when they might be in the wrong. This has led to a few uncomfortable alliances, including her defense and protection of a scoundrel from Newth, Boris Hask, with whom she now shares an uncomfortable and confusing romance. Time will tell to what lengths Sasyll will go to protect her lover from the constables of Willough and Tenpin, or whether Boris' darker tendencies will one day split them apart.
