Nena Light-Hollar is a fog-born farm girl from the tiny village of Selan. She is a skilled battle commander and friendly with all fog dwellers, including the few Curians who still reside in the Valley.   Nena’s grandmother Caster Liann came to the Dearworth Valley in 1503, while the land was still in a deep fog. She brought her husband Harald Light, a High Shally lord, who in his youth had moved from Dearworth to Black Briar in search of work as a schoolteacher. The Liann-Light family moved back to Dearworth once Black Briar became fogged nearly to pure night, a condition that persists today.   The family fared not much better in Selan. But over time, surrounded by a supportive family and friendly neighbors, they made a life for themselves as fishers and woodworkers. Harald’s son Tener Light became a respected worker of halfoak, a sturdy dark wood that litters the banks of the Shentely River. His enterprise Darklight Woodworks became a regional success, and Tenor Light married another transplant from the south, Carolin Hollar.   Their only daughter Nena was a fighter, strong from a very young age, always scrapping with her schoolmates. She soon emerged as the leader of a group of young Selan hoodlums called the Sealy Park Five. To her grandfather’s dismay, Nena quit school at age twelve, preferring to work as a blacksmith’s apprentice.   Nena had strong arms and builder's hands, and at age seventeen she opened a metal shop of her own, creating ironwork and stone carvings for the wealthy families of Alder and Willough, with whom she traded via an extensive network of fog-walking friends. The Sealy Park Five now numbered more than a hundred, a network of toughs and traders stretched up and down the Little Shally.   Today Selan is one of the last truly fog-dark places in the Valley, still mostly unmolested by powers from the big cities. Nena and the Five strive to keep it that way, although they can't change the weather. Nena’s empire is stronger than she knows, and it will soon be tested as powers from Willough move to repopulate and control Selan and the Shentely Valley.
