Jorge Merin is a patriarch of the old school, a devout believer in The Few and a generous patron of the church and supporter of the working classes. His father Gearl Merin was a hodge farmer* near Dowery, a tough father and a stern negotiator.   As a youth, Jorge followed his father into the farming business, and soon expanded his trade into livestock and pack animals, as teams of prospectors flocked to the Spur Valley ten years before the fog began to recede.   In his twenties, Merin supplied mules and serezins** to the mine workers along the Cockerel Spur and far down the Little Shally, to Tenpin and beyond. His small stable grew into a fully-fledged outfitters, JM Trading Co, with franchises in three cities and a fleet of more than two dozen light airships.   During the Dearworth recession and subsequent gold rushes, JM Trading Co. grew into a small empire, and is now under constant threat of buyout by merchant families in Tenpin and Marino. Merin remains faithful to the Dowery region, and to his three sons: Enley, Russ, and Tarpin. His wife Diana perished shortly after the birth of their youngest son.   Jorge is also a spry dancer and proficient on several instruments in the folk style of the Spur Valley.    *A hodge is a yellowish round sweet fruit somewhat like an orange, but with smoother skin.   ** A serezin is a fat red bird with tiny wings, a lighter-than-air creature, and a typical pet of miners and deep fog workers. It has a skrill, brittle cough-like song, and dies almost instantly upon contact with carbon monoxide.
