At the age of nine, the orphan Felipa Meryua (Muh-RYE-ah) was sold by her adopted parents in Selan and taken to the heart of Tenpin by a splinter crew of the Red Road. She passed through several unsavory owners, none of whom could find a way to control her, and at age fifteen she murdered her guardians and began her career as a thief in the dark alleys of Butcher Block, Tenpin.
On a cold night in the winter of her 21st year, Felipa stole from the wrong target, Gunner Toleran (toe-LEE-run), a Pit-Kin master from the Frost Islands. Toleran was Siu Siuelo, a “Perfect Killer” from Seaside, hired and brought to Tenpin by the Ederin family to carry out surgical assassinations.
Toleran decided to adopt and train Felipa. She sees him not as a captor but as a bright point of light who might bring her out of her darkness. She hopes to return one day to her home in the fog, to a city whose name she doesn’t even know. But nothing could be farther from the truth, as Tolerans is grooming her as a partner and successor in a line of perfect killers, a life that he cannot escape and which he came to by much the same path.
Today Felipa is one of Tenpin’s sharpest blades: nimble, capable, and fearless. She serves Gunner Toleran without question, but soon she will intuit his true intentions, and will strike out on her own again.
Leaving him will become the hardest battle of her life.
