Alis detests the fog, and lives high on Benitt Platte near Dowery, soaking up the morning sun with zeal. She has fanciful plans to build a floating castle high above the center of the city, from which she can survey the Spur valley and launch her trade ships to the four corners of the world.
Alis was born to an easy life in Dowery, though she would tell you otherwise. She is third in line for Gran Ducha Dowery, behind her mother Elan Kjell and her father Moris Durant.
Alis lost her only brother Keith to sickness when she was seven, and she has always felt that he left an empty place in her heart. She has never married, and avoids social occasions and crowds. Her ambitions seem to center around the idea that she will always be alone.
Secretly, Alis believes that Keith still walks with her, and she often confides in him and seeks his counsel. She imagines her goals as stemming mostly from his desires, and sometimes she even finds herself uncomfortable when following her brother’s commands.
As the years go by, Keith pushes Alis more and more to build her power base through threats and violence. She finds herself surrounded by enemies who covet the things she has built. Alis now cultivates a small band of unsavory enforcers, who carry out her orders for a price. At times they hear her alone in dark rooms, arguing with no one.
