Humans

Humans are one of the most plentiful species on Deus, and certainly the most diverse. They are one of the four Second Course species, alongside Eagen , Velsen, and Profundem, and were the third of these species to be created.

Humans have the same body plan as most mortals, with rounded ears and no distinguishing traits not shared by several other species. They are similar in appearance to Eagen, and it is theorized that Myvvol and Utar intended their creation to be a one-uppance of the Eagen.

The one true mark of humans is their incredible diversity. While all other species have one, two, or three races, humans have an outstanding thirteen, though they vary in rarity. These races differ in skin tone, hair color, hair texture, and in some cases eye color. Each race is named after a single founding member of the human species.

  1. Lianen—Named after Lian, Lianen have light skin, black hair, and black eyes.
  2. Jinnen—Named after Jin, Jinnen have a similar facial structure to Lianen, with darker skin, brown hair and eyes, and a shorter height.
  3. Vien—Named after Via, Vien have brown skin, dark brown hair, and brown eyes.
  4. Glacer—Named after Glacer, Glacer have pale skin, blond hair, and blue eyes, and they are notably tall.
  5. Umbran—Named after Umbra, Umbrans appear similar to Glacer, with black hair instead of blond.
  6. Fern—Named after Fern, Ferns have pale skin, red hair, and green eyes, and they are notably short. Many have freckles.
  7. Merisan—Named after Meris, Merisians have light skin, black curly hair, and brown eyes.
  8. Alinen—Named after Alin, Alinens have light skin, brown hair, and green eyes.
  9. Veran—Named after Vera, Verans have medium brown skin, brown curly hair, and brown eyes.
  10. Alitan—Named after Alit, Alitans appear similar to Verans, but with straight black hair.
  11. Castoran—Named after Castor, Castorans have very dark skin, black curly hair, and black eyes, and they are notably tall.
  12. Serian—Named after Seri, Seria are similar to Castorans, with somewhat lighter skin and shorter height.
  13. Rillan—Named after Rill, Rills have light brown skin, white hair, and red eyes, and they are often shorter than average height.
Humans, when first created, had the gift to reproduce without a partner, which allowed Myvvol and Utar to create so many races. However, this gift seeded jealousy among the humans, and within three decades of their creation, interracial war broke out. In order to curb this war, their power was taken away, leaving humans the only species without any special ability.

As fallout of this punishment, nearly the entire Rillan line died to inbreeding, showing the other human races that they needed to find mates within other races or risk the same fate. Today, very few show Rillan traits, and nearly every human can trace strong lineage to several human races.

Humans are found in every part of the continent, and some colonies have set up camps within the Seas of Earth and Sea of Air . They are a common sight nearly anywhere one may go.

Naming Traditions

Humans have a wide variety of names due to their wide variety of races. Once, different races had their own naming conventions—Lianen and Jinnen names had greater occurences of high vowels, Glacer and Umbran names long with many consonant clusters, Serian and Castoran names long with low vowels, and Fern and Alinen names almost always monosyllabic—but as the races mingled, so did their names, and overall name diversity shrunk, with the verb-names of the Rills dying out almost entirely.

Most modern human given names have few consonant clusters, and consonants and vowels are often fairly balanced. Name lengths vary, but the overwhelming majority are two syllables long, with many others being monosyllabic. It's not uncommon to see humans named after the thirteen original humans, with such names occasionally transcending gender lines—many human names, in fact, can be used for any gender.

Human surnames have a notably different sound to them than many other names, having been first conceived by human cities in Aqua and carrying the accent of the region with them. While the accent itself tends to fade in other regions, the trademarks remain, such as leaving off final consonants or including nasal vowels, and vowels are often realized in uncommon ways.
