The Penny War Military Conflict in Deus Irae: Falling Night | World Anvil

The Penny War

Taking place in Theostenes over the course of a decade, the Penny War is a rather comical name for a rather brutal conflict.
Fought between the Council of Kings of Theostenes (as well as expeditionary forces from across the world) and a copper mining combine and their army of very well payed mercenaries and volunteers made up from employees, the war raged in every corner of the country. Countries dropped in and out, taking advantage as they saw fit. Some even taking to looting the country straight up before being expelled.
With naval landings having to be done on a regular basis and no good way to do so without massive logistical support, casualties for all sides were high.

The Conflict

Prelude

Copper magnates attempt to consolidate their economic power, forming into the Clylope Combine. It wasn't quite enough for them, however, and overtime they built up an army of mercenaries and hired guns. They attempted to avoid an outright conflict by slowly strangling the copper trade. Still able to sell to other nations, the Combine would be able to keep it up indefinitely, while Theostenes would continue to hurt from the loss of a major economic mover.   The Combine underestimated the gumption of Theostenes' council, and soon their mines and outposts were under attack. They found unexpected success, however, and the conflict turned into a sloggish stalemate. For a time it seemed that the council of kings would have to bend down to the Combine. Then the council put out a bounty in heavily sided trade deals and payment contracts. Almost every nation got in on the action, scrapping together as many boats and men as they could on short notice, and shipping them out to fight for the many kings and queens of Theostenes.   That is the start to the Penny War.
