The False Sunrise

In Makhtok, it is tradition to not look directly at the horizon until the triplicate suns are entirely above it.  
If asked why that's the case, the people might give you an answer about "Having your eyes tricked away" or the 'Soulrise'.
However cryptic the explanation, the practice is born out of practical application. The False Sunrise is a very real even that can easily be circumvented by simply not looking at it. 
Characterized by green light instead of the usual red, the event starts about an hour before first light and continues until the suns full reveal themselves. Those that view the even full on in that timeframe will find their eyes damaged beyond use by an unseen force. The wound they suffer is like someone pulled a blade from one temple to the other, clean and straight.  
There's no protection from it, no armor or ward stops it. Like the force simply appears on the eyes themselves.
Whatever caused it, there is no record of it. Not even local stories and legends. It simply exists within the borders of Makhtok.
So keep your head down, yeah?
