The Demon's Gate Incident

Disaster / Destruction

36B.D.

The Demon's Gate disaster occurred when dwarven miners in a seaside town called Aldavarda discovered a mysterious gateway deep in the earth. When the gateway was activated, it opened a passage to the demon realm and allowed the fiends to spill out into the world.   It took several decades to drive the demons back and seal the gate, which gave plenty of time for demons to spread their influence in the world. The demons even opened gateways to other realms, releasing devils, angels, and elementals into the world in a magnitude the world had never encountered. As a result, the immortal bloodlines of these races became deeply imbedded in the bloodlines of mortals and the world has slowly grown more dangerous even after all the gateways were sealed.   Aldavarda was renamed to Ocean's Gate as a reminder of what had occurred there and continued to experience numerous bad omens and disasters in the centuries since, earning it the nickname of "Curse Town" or "Curston" for short. Much of the town has since eroded into the sea and the last of the original inhabitants were killed off when the Selachii, a merfolk race with shark-like traits, claimed the town as their own since most of it was now in their waters.
