Practical Uses for Cantrips

Cantrips are a category of spells that require minimal effort to cast and are accessible to most spellcasters with basic training. As a result, they are often used for a variety of purposes, even by non-adventurers. Many cantrips are often straightforward, doing exactly what their name implies. For example, Know Direction allows the caster to determine the direction of true north, while Mending allows the caster to repair minor damage to small objects.

Acid Splash

The Acid Splash cantrip creates a small projectile of acid that can be aimed at a target up to 30 feet away from the caster. Although primarily designed for combat, Acid Splash has practical applications outside of combat.   For example, the spell can be used to remove rust from metal surfaces or to clean stubborn dirt from hard-to-reach areas. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the surface or surrounding area. Acid Splash can also be used to corrode locks or chains, although it may take several attempts to weaken them enough to break. In addition, Acid Splash can be used to dissolve small obstacles that impede progress, such as thorny vines or dense webs.

Create Water

The Create Water spell is an essential cantrip, as it instantly and conveniently summons drinkable water within a 30-foot radius of the caster. The amount of water created can vary, but is typically about one gallon per second. This spell is especially important in settlements without access to fresh water sources, where it is cast daily to fill large reservoirs. It is worth noting that, despite the name, the spell does not create water directly from the aether, but summons it from the water table.   Furthermore, Create Water has a wide range of potential uses, as water is essential for survival and countless tasks: Fighting fires, cleaning clothes and surfaces, watering crops, etc. It is important to note, however, that due to the rapid rate at which water is summoned, this spell must be used with care to avoid creating hazards or water damage.   The Drench cantrip has many of the same applications, except that it produces much less water and does so more gradually.

Dancing Lights

The spell Dancing Lights allows the caster to create up to four colored motes of light that can be moved at will as long as they remain within a 10-foot radius. These motes last for 1 minute, after which the spell must be cast again to create new motes.   The primary use of dancing lights is for illumination and navigation. By using the floating light motes, one can illuminate their surroundings and facilitate easy navigation in the dark, whether at night or in shadowy areas such as dense forests. However, there are other potential uses for dancing lights beyond lighting and navigation. For example, they can be used for signaling, as the lights are visible from a great distance and the movements and colors of the motes can be used to communicate various messages. In addition, the lights can be used for entertainment, such as creating a light show by moving them to the beat of music, manipulating them like puppets while telling a story, or even using them as a light source for shadow puppets.

Daze

The Daze spell is capable of briefly clouding a humanoid's mind, rendering them incapable of effective action for a few seconds before the effect wears off. Although its duration is very short, it can be used strategically in combat to create opportunities for attack or escape. In non-combat scenarios, it is sometimes used by city guards to subdue criminals who resist arrest. It can also be used for less noble purposes, such as by mischievous individuals to play pranks on others or to cheat in games.

Flare

The Flare spell creates a bright flash of light at a specific location within 30 feet of the caster. Its primary purpose is to temporarily blind an enemy by exploding the light in their face. The Flare spell can also be used as a signal, though it lacks the complexity of the colors and movements of Dancing Lights.

Ghost Sound

The spell Ghost Sound allows the caster to create illusory sounds within a 30-foot range of the caster. The quality and duration of the sounds depend on the caster's skill. On average, the sounds can last about 25 seconds and can be as loud as a lion roaring or about 16 people screaming. The sounds can be manipulated to appear to increase or decrease in volume, move closer or farther away, or remain stationary. While the spell can create a wide variety of sounds, it cannot create precise or clear sounds, such as recognizable speech. For example, it can replicate the ambience of a bustling tavern, but not individual conversations or words.   A performer could use Ghost Sound to enhance their performance by adding realistic sound effects to their act. For pranks, it could also be used to create fake sounds to scare your friends or neighbors, such as a ghostly moan coming from an empty room. Ghost sound can also be used as a non-verbal means of communication, such as between individuals in a noisy environment or from a distance. For example, a ship's captain could use the spell to signal orders to the crew during a storm or battle.

Mage Hand

The Mage Hand spell allows the caster to use hand gestures to lift and move a non-magical, unattended object within a 30-foot radius. The object moves slowly, not exceeding 2 mph. The weight of the object cannot exceed 5 pounds. The duration of the spell depends on the caster's ability to maintain concentration, and the object must remain within range for the spell to continue working.   Mage Hand is often used for practical purposes, such as retrieving out-of-reach items that are still within the caster's line of sight. Crafters, for example, can use this spell to retrieve small parts without having to leave their work. It can also be used for playful mischief, such as moving or removing items when no one is looking, or floating an item just out of someone's reach.

Message

The Message spell allows the caster to whisper a message to a selected group of people, who must be within a 150-foot radius of the caster and who must be identified by pointing at them. The message is audible to both the recipients and anyone else in the vicinity who is paying attention, unless it is blocked by a physical barrier of sufficient thickness. Recipients can respond by whispering their response, and the spell remains active for about 30 minutes, allowing for extended conversations.   While the Message spell is often used for discreet communication in stealth or dangerous situations, it also has practical applications. Its wide range and long duration make it useful for facilitating group communication during projects where members are not always in close proximity. Some speakers use the spell to receive input from coordinators without interrupting their presentation.

Purify Food and Drink

The Purify Food and Drink cantrip has the ability to render food and drink free of contamination from spoilage, disease, filth, or inherent toxins, making it safe for consumption. It can also be used to ruin impure food and drink, such as unholy water.   This cantrip offers a unique advantage in its ability to transform otherwise inedible foraged goods into a viable food supply. For example, meat from diseased or poisonous creatures, poisonous mushrooms, and toxic berries can be made safe for consumption. However, it cannot improve the taste of unpleasant or bitter foods.

Putrefy Food and Drink

The Putrefy Food and Drink spell has the ability to cause food and drink to immediately spoil and rot. It can also render alchemical potions and holy water useless. However, the spell must be targeted individually to affect potions. While this spell can be used maliciously, it can also have practical applications. For example, it can be used to quickly decompose large amounts of organic waste and speed up the composting process.

Ray of Frost

The spell Ray of Frost allows the caster to project a narrow beam of freezing air and ice from their finger. The beam can travel up to 30 feet before dissipating. While Ray of Frost is primarily used in combat situations, it also has some practical applications outside of combat.   Ray of Frost can be used to quickly freeze perishable foods, keeping them fresh for longer periods of time. Similar to preserving food, Ray of Frost can be used to quickly chill beverages. By freezing water or other liquids with Ray of Frost, you can create a slippery surface to prevent someone or something from chasing you. Ray of Frost may be able to extinguish small fires by rapidly cooling the flames, but this would probably only be effective on very small fires.

Telekinetic Projectile

The Telekinetic Projectile spell allows the caster to hurl a non-magical object weighing up to 5 pounds in any direction within a range of about 30 feet. The object is propelled with great force and speed, often causing damage on impact to both the object and the target it strikes.   While most people think of Telekinetic Projectile as a combat spell, it has practical applications outside of combat. For example, it can be used to throw a fishing net farther than you could normally throw it yourself. It can also be used to drive nails and other fasteners without the need for additional tools.
