Freya the Butcher

The Butcher Freya Draconis

Freya is a dedicated scholar whose passion for comparative anatomy has led her to the fringes of society. She earned the title of "The Butcher" due to a turbulent incident where her laboratory was raided, revealing subjects in various states of autopsy and preservation. This discovery resulted in her being put on trial for desecration of the dead, ultimately leading to her exile from her community. Despite this setback, Freya's fascination with what she terms "Template Anatomy" remains undeterred.   Knowing that her research methods are considered criminal, Freya has chosen to disregard the law when it hinders her pursuit of knowledge. Undeterred by societal norms, she continues her studies with fervor. To continue her research, Freya takes matters into her own hands and occasionally resorts to stealing unbutchered animals and unattended corpses when the opportunity arises. Through these unauthorized means, she can conduct her autopsies and delve deeper into her study of anatomical differences.   Freya's unyielding curiosity and dedication to her research have led her down a path of defiance and seclusion. Her passion for understanding the intricacies of "Template Anatomy" drives her to break societal norms and embrace the role of an outsider. Despite the consequences she faces, Freya's thirst for knowledge remains insatiable, and she forges ahead, exploring the depths of comparative anatomy in her quest for understanding.

The Butcher

As news of Freya's trial and exile spread far and wide, her story became a subject of fascination and intrigue in various corners of Dessend. The tale of "The Butcher" reached the ears of many, capturing the imaginations of those who heard it. As stories often do, they grew and morphed with each retelling, taking on a life of their own.   The moniker "The Butcher" was attributed to Freya, but as the story traveled, people began to embellish the details, exaggerating the gruesomeness of her actions. The title became a sensational label, conjuring images of a macabre and malevolent figure. Though a face was never associated with the name, the legend of "The Butcher" grew in magnitude as it passed from person to person.   As with many tales that become part of folklore, the true essence of Freya's journey may have been distorted in the retelling. While she did engage in controversial research and faced a trial for desecration of the dead, her passion for comparative anatomy and pursuit of knowledge were at the core of her endeavors. However, the mystery surrounding her identity and the dramatic narrative of the title "The Butcher" captured the imagination of those who heard it.

Template Anatomy

The concept of "Template Anatomy" is a term coined by Freya herself, representing her unique perspective on the fundamental blueprint from which most creatures were designed. According to Freya's definition, this template encompasses specific hallmarks that are common across various species she has studied.   The key features of Freya's Template Anatomy include four limbs, one tail, a single head with two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and one mouth. The torso consists of a rib cage and hip bone and houses two lungs, one heart, one liver, and one stomach, connected to a tract of intestines. These traits serve as the core foundation shared by the majority of species she has observed.   Interestingly, Freya acknowledges that even species that lack a tail often retain vestigial structures related to its presence, reinforcing the concept of the "blank slate" from which life has evolved.   While her previous research focused on creatures that adhered to this Template Anatomy, Freya has begun to turn her attention to fish, as they diverge from this generic template. Her current study aims to identify the unique anatomical blueprint that governs fish species, seeking to define their individual template that sets them apart from other creatures she has examined.   Freya is also eager to delve into the study of arthropods, acknowledging the complexity and challenges they present in defining their anatomical template. These creatures, with their diverse forms and structures, pose an exciting and intricate puzzle for Freya's analytical mind, fueling her passion for exploration and discovery.   As Freya continues her research into the anatomical templates of different species, her pioneering approach to understanding the fundamental similarities and differences among creatures showcases her boundless curiosity and determination as a scholar on the fringes of society. Through her pursuit of knowledge, she seeks to unlock the secrets of the natural world and unravel the mysteries that lie within its diverse inhabitants.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Freya's passion for anatomy began to blossom during her late teens when she spent a summer on a ranch owned by a family friend. It was there, while caring for the animals, that she noticed striking similarities shared between different species, including her own kind, the Fera. Intrigued by these observations, she started journaling her findings and engaging in close study. Her curiosity even extended to witnessing the process of animal slaughter, further fueling her desire to understand the intricacies of anatomy.   Upon returning home, Freya continued her studies as best she could with the small animals living in the urban environment around her. As she matured into adulthood, she moved into her own laboratory, where she provided healing services and created potions to support her ongoing research. With a growing fascination for anatomy, she began to trap and study small urban creatures, refining her techniques to create a process akin to an autopsy, carefully preserving the specimens for study. To further her knowledge, she also ventured into the nearby wilds and enlisted the help of adventurers to bring back new and diverse specimens.   The steady stream of unusual corpses entering her laboratory eventually aroused suspicion among the locals, leading them to take action. City guards broke into her laboratory and discovered the corpses in various states of preservation and autopsy. Freya's possession of humanoid corpses only added to the horror of the scene, despite her best efforts to maintain sterile conditions in her work.   Found guilty of desecration of the dead, Freya faced a harsh sentence of exile. She was allowed to take only a limited number of personal belongings and a week's worth of rations before being escorted to the border and sent away from her home. Undeterred, Freya set out to find a new place to call her own, determined to continue her studies as if nothing had changed.   Maintaining a facade as an alchemist and healer, Freya worked to earn money and fund the construction of a new laboratory, this time located outside the confines of the city. With her passion for anatomy still aflame, she persisted in her quest for knowledge and understanding, resolute in pursuing her studies despite the obstacles and challenges she had faced.

Education

Freya's journey as a scholar and anatomist was shaped by a diverse range of educational experiences. She received a basic education in her hometown's school, where she learned essential skills such as reading, language, mathematics, and regional history. However, it was her additional tutelage as an alchemist's apprentice that opened the doors to her passion for understanding the mysteries of anatomy.   During her time on the ranch, Freya learned the art of animal husbandry, which allowed her to gain insights into the behavior and physiology of various creatures. This hands-on experience further fueled her fascination with the similarities and differences among different species.   But it was Freya's insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge that truly drove her exploration of comparative anatomy. Self-taught, she meticulously observed the natural world around her, studying creatures up close and delving into exploratory autopsies. Her unyielding determination and keen observational skills became her greatest teachers as she embarked on a path of anatomical discovery.   Without formal guidance or conventional instruction in anatomy, Freya's self-driven study allowed her to approach the subject with a fresh perspective. Her hands-on approach and real-life encounters with the creatures she studied enriched her understanding of their inner workings, granting her unique insights into the intricacies of "Template Anatomy."

Morality & Philosophy

Freya's unwavering dedication to her studies, regardless of societal pressures or legal constraints, has led her to adopt a more elusive and solitary existence. Her passion for unraveling the mysteries of anatomy outweighs any concern for conventional norms or laws, and she is no longer bound by the constraints of societal expectations.   With her trial and the subsequent incidents of stealing, Freya has become a figure operating on the fringes of society. Her disregard for the law and her willingness to take unconventional measures to obtain the supplies and corpses she needs for her research have distanced her from the mainstream community. Her actions have, at times, forced her to remain hidden and secretive to avoid unwanted attention from authorities and those who disapprove of her pursuits.   Freya's singular focus on her studies and her disregard for societal norms have made her an outsider in the eyes of many. Yet, she remains resolute in her pursuit of knowledge, driven by an insatiable curiosity that knows no bounds. Her unyielding determination to explore "Template Anatomy" and the complexities of various species' anatomies has made her willing to venture into the unknown, even if it means operating on the fringes of society.   Her unconventional path may have isolated her from the mainstream, but for Freya, the pursuit of knowledge and understanding outweighs any social or legal implications. As she delves deeper into her research, Freya remains a solitary scholar, unbound by societal pressures, determined to unravel the secrets of anatomy, no matter the cost.
