Classifications of Magic
Magic in the world of Dessend is divided into four distinct categories: Inherent Spellcraft, Magecraft, Witchcraft, and Divine Spellcraft.
Inherent Spellcraft is a form of magic that refers to spellcasters who possess an innate talent for magic and can cast spells without any assistance or formal training in magic. The use of wands, staves, and other items that store spells also falls into this category. This form of magic is widely accepted and admired by many.
Magecraft, on the other hand, involves the use of magical writings to cast spells. Wizards and arcanists fall into this category, using spellbooks to prepare spells. Anyone who uses a scroll to cast spells is also practicing magecraft. While this form of magic is widely accepted, some races, such as goblins and orcs, distrust magical writings, and as a result, magecraft is shunned or criminalized in certain regions.
Witchcraft is a practice that involves contacting otherworldly beings or forces, known as patrons, to gain access to magic. However, because many of these patrons are malevolent beings who pursue hidden agendas through their followers, the practice of witchcraft is widely distrusted and criminalized in many places. Interestingly, cultures that shun magecraft often accept or even embrace witchcraft.
Divine Spellcraft, the final category, involves magical powers bestowed upon someone by their deity. This type of magic is seen as similar to, but different from, witchcraft because deities live in this world alongside mortals, and their identities and agendas are well known. However, the acceptance of divine magic varies widely, depending largely on the region's view of the deity who provides the powers.
