Black Aether

Black Aether, a term used to describe a corrupted form of Aether, results when the Aether stored in small creatures such as grass or insects is forcibly extracted. Unlike the standard practice of extracting Aether from Aetherite crystals, this extraction process results in the death of the creatures and taints the Aether with a malevolent influence.   Black Aether, like regular Aether, serves as an energy source for spellcasting, but its use comes at a high cost. Those who resort to frequent use of black aether often experience a gradual corruption of their minds and bodies. They become consumed by ambition, power-seeking, and a diminished sense of empathy. The physical damage inflicted on the body reflects the nature of the magic performed with Black Aether, such as charred flesh from fire spells or necrotic skin from necromantic practices.   Black Aether is obtained in the same manner as Aether from Aetherite crystals, the traditional means of quickly replenishing Aether reserves. But instead of targeting crystals, practitioners focus on patches of grass and the life beneath. It is important to note that the use of black aether is forbidden due to its harmful effects. The vast majority of spellcasters consider the use of Black Aether a last resort, when all other sources of aether have been exhausted and desperation sets in.   The well-known reputation of Black Aether's corrupting influence serves as a deterrent to its use. Understanding its destructive effects on the mind, body, and moral compass keeps most practitioners from venturing into this forbidden territory. Only in dire circumstances, when no other alternatives remain, would a spellcaster even consider resorting to Black Aether, acknowledging the grave risks and consequences associated with its use.
