Thalia Black Character in Descent into Avernus | World Anvil

Thalia Black

Thalia Black had a relatively normal childhood growing up. An only child and lived in various parts of the world over her developing years. Most of her childhood was on a farm where she first really came in touch with healing arts. Affording a doctor was expensive. In her small community as well there were no real doctors, if any. As such she spent a good portion of her time learning how to use herbs, chemicals, and various processes of juicing, cooking, purifying extracts to make better healing, as well as practicing rudimentary surgery. She left to pursue an education in her field craft, and to earn a living. Like many she yearned for adventure. A follower of Amaunator, and incredibly devout to her faith. Though around her 25th birthday she was beginning to have strange dreams. Dreams she could not explain. It was a gradual five years of them on and off over that time, not every day. Dreams of space, strange colors she could not name, shapes and geometry that over time was making less sense, or rather, impossible to describe. Many times she attempted to draw out what she dreamed but it was fragmentary as best, and incoherent scribbling at worst.   Around her 30th birthday with a party paid and tasked to destroy a small cult growing in the region. It was small, and otherwise harmless until someone went missing. The order was to kill everyone to the last man, and burn everything inside. To scour it from history. Though upon the journey in these abandoned mines where they were nestled her dreams turned to visions. All at once her dreams, the sights and scenes all made sense now. True to the mission, the cultists were slain, but she managed to steal as much as she could in literature. Tomes on the eldritch and knowledge to further her studies.   After that day she stopped actively traveling, and worked as a doctor within the city (presumably whichever city we start in.) among others. She served short stints as a combat medic for troopers/soldiers. As an apocalypse domain cleric, she is not concerned with actively starting the end, but rather teaches it will. An Absurdist in philosophy for she has seen the literal end of reality. Not despair, or fear. But love, happiness and joy. Knowing that the value in life and reality is what we give it. Ceasing to exist does not change that.Additionally she writes in the local paper to have open discourse and discussions about the philosophical and sciences. (was thinking of writing out a manifesto IRL to be used in play)     Thalia overall is a scientist-philosopher. A blunt scientific desire for knowledge, she does not believe in "evil" knowledge, only evil practices. All while preaching her belief in the end times. She is fiercely loyal to her comrades, smugly intelligent, almost abrasive and packed with quick wit.
