Human

Ubiquitous and world-reaching is the human species. Often considered the baseline by which all other humanoids are contrasted to - hence the meaning of the word, some would say - humans lack exceptional or magical traits but make up for it in versatility. Where a dwarf is tough or an elf is quick or an orc is powerful, an exceptional human may be all three.   In many eras, humans are at the forefront of change in the world and many times the drivers of history. In some schools of thought it's considered an omen of great import when a society led by humans forges alliances with others.   One fact that makes humans unusual is their ability to cross-breed with both elves and orcs, neither of whom can breed with each other. This trait has led some to propose the idea that elves and orcs are related to humans as cousins of a sort, and that humans may indeed be the original progenitor species.   Humans also exhibit far greater sexual dimorphism than many other humanoid species in the world. This leads some humans - mostly those who spend their entire lives around other humans - to have trouble telling the sexes apart when they interact with dwarves or tabaxi or dragonborn or others. Oftentimes these humans will mention how strange their neighboring species are, when really it truly is the humans who are the oddity here.

Humans in the World

In Des Forabis the greatest centers of human civilization are the ancient nation of Khollaja and it's neighbor the Holy Cradian Empire. When the continent was first colonized some millennia ago, it was a group primarily comprised of humans who cleaved away the southern reaches of the Old Forest Er'us and built these countries. Eventually dragonborn, dwarves, elves, and many other peoples made landing alongside or nearby the humans and spread across the land, forming their own territories in certain places.   Humans likewise exist all throughout the known world outside of Des Forabis, and like many other species, have no one known original home. Because they have lived in Des Forabis for only a relatively short time as far as world history is concerned, humans of all types and colors coexist side-by-side and intermingle freely.

Human Player Characters

As a human, you can be anything or anyone you wish. You are not tied to any kind of magical or innate biology or instinct. Since humans can mingle with orcs and elves, it is possible that your own family has an orc or an elf somewhere in its family tree - diluted by time and generations. Perhaps your great-great-great-grandfather was a moon elf, and that explains why you have a talent for magic. Or perhaps a distant great-aunt was an orc and you have inherited her exceptionally broad shoulders.   As with every other species, consider when making your character your upbringing: mother, father, siblings, extended family. Are they around in your life today? Why have you chosen to leave them for a life of danger?   You may be a Standard Human, representing the baseline that all humanoids are compared to. Alternatively, you can be a Focused Human, someone who has applied themselves to a particular set of skills or abilities (or learned them innately through some event) in exchange for generic aptitude.
