Divinity and the Cosmos

The world of adventure is one of many; outside of the Material Plane exist the Inner Elemental Planes, and outside of those exist the Outer Aligned Planes. Each layer of each Outer Plane is home to a god, an entity of overwhelming cosmic power who seeks to transform the universe to match their image. Each Outer Plane, and each god at the Plane's center, is inextricably linked to a particular Alignment, from Lawful Good to Chaotic Evil. Creatures born on these Planes are likewise bound to their Alignment, unlike creatures born on the Material Plane.   Most gods, in their efforts to shape the universe as they see fit, utilize angels and clerics. Angels are creatures born on Outer Planes, take a huge variety of physical forms, and serve various purposes. An angel is always bound to the absolute service of their creator; an angel who somehow changes their Alignment is transformed irrevocably - sometimes to the servitude of a completely different god.   Clerics are mortals, born on the Material Plane, who have the freedom to make their own choices and whose Alignment might change over the course of their life as they grow and mature, or as the result of trauma. Mortals who hold a particularly consistent Alignment and set of values that closely match those of a god are sometimes blessed by the god they worship. Occasionally, a god might choose a cleric who didn't even know the god existed. These blessings manifest as divine magic. Clerics are duty bound to seek their god's goals on their home plane, almost always traveling far and wide to enact change and do battle with the god's enemies. Some clerics might worship multiple gods in a pantheon, but ultimately their source of power comes from a particular individual.   In addition to their Alignment, each god's power manifests into a particular Domain. A cleric who serves a god can wield powers only from one of the Domains ordained by their god.

God Encyclopedia

This page will serve as a list of every god a cleric might serve - good and evil, well-known and forgotten. Clerics are uniquely chosen by the god they serve to fulfill that god's desires in the world they live in. A cleric who fails to live up to the ideals of their god might find their powers limited or revoked. A cleric who fulfills their god's wishes in life might have their exceptional soul collected and transformed into an immortal angel to continue serving after their death. Of course, any person may worship any god they wish, even if they are not a cleric - some religions promise divine rewards for the devout, besides powers like spellcasting.   A god will never choose a cleric whose Alignment significantly mismatches their own. As a rule, a cleric's Alignment must share at least one Alignment trait with their god. For example, the cleric of a Lawful Good god could be Lawful Good, Neutral Good, or Lawful Neutral. The cleric of a Neutral Evil god could be True Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, or Chaotic Evil. These restrictions of Alignment only apply to true clerics, not to everyone who worships a given god. After all, it is not terribly uncommon for an evildoer to infiltrate a religious order in pursuit of power and influence.   This list is never exhaustive. A variety of religions exist the world over and many of them produce true clerics regardless of their differences. And as cultures and the needs of the people in them change, different gods may find worship in places where they were not favored before.
