For uncountable generations, magic -a gift from the gods- has shaped the evolution of man. From a single, powerless people they grew into numerous distinctly divided species and creatures.
Despite the harsh world they had to survive in, the many species remained divided, fighting among each other for control, for dominance, for greed or need, out of fear or desperation. For the longest time, it didn't matter what excuse they could use to hate those that were different than themselves.
But one day, they were at once of a single mind, united against a common enemy. It was revealed that The gods had given man the gift of magic not to enlighten or empower them, but as a tool that could be used to control and shape them however the divine beings wished.
Finally, the many races were united by one thing; their fury. And, after centuries of study and improvement, their power. They were now strong enough to strike back against The gods, who tried in vain to keep their little science experiment under control.
'They could never win', The gods told them. 'They weren't even a united species, they were weak, divided.'
The many races of Deruña heard this proclamation, and rebelled against it. They were divided, certainly.
But their differences, the divisions between them made them better, not weak.
United under one banner, The Races Divided, a war was fought against the gods. A war of untold loss and destruction, of unexpected allies and practices that perverted the very way life was meant to be. But a war that was won. One in which The Divided, as they came to be called, cowed their very gods to their will.
A peace was reached, one in which The gods would leave The Divided to their natural lives, would stop interfering. They would simply observe -now in wonder of how powerful, independent, and determined their children had become- and see what would become of them.
It is now some dozen and a half decades since the end of that war, the Races Divided have prospered in their newfound agency, but life still isn't without its struggles. The Council of the Divided controls the laws of the world, but not all are treated fairly. The settlements of Deruña protect their inhabitants, but not all can rest safe within their walls.
