The God Wars

In the beginning, there were the gods. 8 gods, 8 leylines of magic laced around the planet.
They fought among themselves for the most part, over which of their creations would be the strongest. When a creation got too strong, they would challenge them to a fight, on the promise of if they won they would take the spot as a god.
This let to some brutal fights among the creations, with some of them challenging other gods who they saw as weaker than the one they worshiped, in attempts to take their spots.
The 8 High Mages wanted a piece of godhood for themselves, and after the death of the god who did not have many worshippers compared to the others, decided they would battle each other for the right to claim that place. They fought among themselves for years, before the fight escalated to a point where entire mountain ranges were flattened, grass lands became craters, and seas were frozen over. The gods stepped in to try and control them, and in doing so set about a war that lasted a decade. They wiped out these mages and destroyed their towers and the majority of their research and creations.
The gods then fought among themselves over who's fault it was that these mages tried to rise up in the first place - this additional battle lasted for another 4 years. Ultimately, they decided they should step away from their creation and stop interfering - seeing that it would lead to their own ruin.
Some gods stayed close, to bestow smaller gifts of power on those who worshiped them, granting small boons for their most devot and more dedicated followers. Others drifted off to start new projects on other planes of existence.
It is said that some of the other planets are the gods newer toys, where untold horrors and lush forests are never to be seen by the inhabitants of Der'Nomic.

The Conflict

The whole planet was affected. Battles often started in one continent and ended in another.

Outcome

Following a meeting with the leaders of all the countries at the time, it was decided that a new era should be called, and all calendars reset to the year 0, the first of year 1 occuring approx 80 days after the meeting.

Aftermath

Huge loss of magical knowledge and technology.

Historical Significance

Legacy

Songs and stories are sung and told people the planet over - some of the worst of the battles, some of little positives that came from it. Many children's rhymes have their basis in events that happened during The God Wars.
