Cladatir

The beach dwarves are an offshoot of the dwarven race that live by the sea. Their culture is centered on fishing, sailing and specialized industries like rope making. In most fundamental ways, they are similar to mountain and hill dwarves, but the differences are key in understanding beach dwarf culture. They cluster in towns and cities along the coast, rarely settling further inland. Sometimes they settle along rivers but usually they continue to build up in a few small areas, resulting in tall and impressive cities. Beach dwarves produce excellent rope, ships, tools and weapons from glass and shells and other things. They make beautiful jewelry from pearls, glass and exotic scales. The rope they make is lighter than standard hemp rope and a bit stronger, coming from certain underwater plants. Huge sea creatures with hard shells provide materials as hard as stone to work with. They tend to import large timbers and metals for the few things they need it for.

Fishing is the lifeblood of their culture. They trap small crustaceans along the coast and cast deep nets to gather entire schools of fish. They specialize in hunting huge whale sized beasts that can sometimes feed entire communities at once. It's not unusual for a fishing vessel to be tethered to a monster for hours before ending their hunt. They are brash and straightforward as all dwarves are. They're more accepting of outsiders than mountain dwellers and often trade with other cultures. They are organized into clans like other dwarves. Family and storytelling are key parts of their cultures. Most dwarfs of any kind have dozens of stories to tell about the accomplishments of their ancestors about r generations up. Dwarf culture is more physical and oral than written, though basic records and epics exist.

They worship Torag first and his brother Gozreh , god of the ocean. Torag is worshipped as a god of craftsman and dwarf culture in general. Gozreh is worshipped almost as much, giving safety and good bounty to fishermen. The symbol of beach dwarf families often have both gods, with a hammer and hook or a golden shore or blue water.

Common Myths and Legends

WHen they descend to the material plane, they were placed in the center of the earth. After establishing a society, some ventured up to become the mountain dwarves. Again some ventured up to become the hill dwarves. And again some ventured out, to the very boundary of "Earth" the beach, as far as dwarves can settle. The ones that remained underground remained stagnant until they were slowly corrupted by teh forces of the void from below.   When the hill dwarves finally reached the shore they despaired. There was no more land to claim. Until one day a dwarf had a vision sent to him by Gozreh to swim across a huge ass channel. He did, with only an axe on his back and by gozreh's grace, reached the shore. With the guidance of torag he hew the large timbers of that land into the first ship and berthed it himself. Once in the ocean he rowed and rowed until nightfall when a spirit of desna shone a light in the sky to guide him home. He got back and all the dwarves were there waiting. "Holy shit he built a boat" and that was the first Cladatir.
