Captain 'Lucky Jack' Norwood
Another of the famous captains, 'Lucky Jack' Norwood rose to fame decades after Abomination Island fell. He was an unlikely sort to gain the notoriety that he did. Of a smaller build he lacked the conventional strength and composition of the other great captains of history. But by all accounts what he did possess was seemingly infinite luck.
Born on Belmont Isle to an eccentric family Jack Norwood boarded a ship later than most of his peers, only reaching the sea at seventeen. Up until that point he had been living and working the family vineyard, it was a decent life until his parents kicked him out and burned the house to the ground in a classic act of The Belmont Madness.
Now in a new profession he had no idea of, Lucky Jack picked up on naval life quickly. He served as a deck hand on close to twenty merchant vessels, all of which were attacked by pirates at some point leaving him as the only survivor. Eventually one of the pirate captains took a liking to the small man and kept him aboard. They played a cruel game with their captive, forcing him to make predictions with threat of death if he was wrong. This is where the legend of his innate luck grew from. Despite making up whatever he told them, it would always come true.
Eventually he was accepted as a crew member and throughout multiple raids and voyages everything he seemed to attempt worked out perfectly for him. After a few years the legend of 'Lucky Jack' grew. He had become a legend among men and already most sailors could recount a story of his heroism. His fame soon brought him to captaincy on a ship and eventually he had a fleet of privateers under his command.
One particular legend tells that Lucky Jack was the first to worship the deity of 'Lady Luck.' This hasn't been entirely discounted with the historical timelines lining up closely enough for it to have been possible. However, one day on a rowing boat trip Lucky Jack's wife was tipped overboard and drowned. But Jack's luck proved true and he had married a goddess that was walking Deloth, in her death she returned to her plane and became the governess of all luck in the world. This particular story of the origins of 'Lady Luck' is the most controversial, most people are skeptical of the various details.
However there are books of tales about how Lucky the man was. Most of them were easily verifiable by witnesses. Such as igniting the cargo of lantern oil on a escaping merchant ship with an accidental firebolt, causing the ship to explode. Or when he dodged five arrows in as many seconds due to the rocking of the ship. His unluckiest moment was when he attempted a raid on an Avarniom ship that happened to be carrying an early prototype of cannon. With no knowledge of gunpowder outside Avarniom Lucky Jack's luck ran out when the cannonball removed his head.
The legends of 'Lucky Jack' Norwood fill many volumes across Deloth. The main modern issue with the character is that new stories keep being written despite his death over a century ago. There are not many that can tell which stories are true and which aren't anymore. Captain Norwood has become a character of fantasy in modern Deloth, his tales being told as entertainment.
