Courier

The Mail Carriers of Rothos

Couriers are the people who act as mail carriers in Rothos. They are tasked with carrying packages and letters of many shapes and sizes to their intended destinations. All of the mail Couriers carry must meet the Rothian Mailing Requirements before being submitted for delivery or it is not able to be sent. At least, the mail that doesn't meet the requirements isn't able to be sent by the official Couriers of Rothos. A secondary organization of mail carriers does exist that uses wagons instead of the specialized backpacks of official Couriers. This organization — The Wagoneers Company — is able to carry packages that far exceed the weight and size limits of the official Couriers.

Types of Couriers

Flyers

Flyers are a type of Courier who flies to deliver their assigned mail to their indicated destinations. Flyer Couriers must have the ability to fly, and, as such, they are normally Angels.

Riders

Riders are a type of courier who uses a mount — typically a horse — to deliver their assigned mail to their indicated destinations. Rider Couriers tend to be either Angels who are unable to pass the tests of speed and strength in flight or people of a flightless race.

Requirements of Work

Physical Requirements

Couriers must be in excellent physical shape due to the nature of the work. They must pass a test of speed and strength once every month, and are only able to work if they haven't failed the test more than twice in a row.

For the "Flyers", Couriers must be able to travel at 40 km/h or more while carrying 10 kg of weight. For the "Riders", their tests require them to be able to ride a horse for 3 hours straight while carrying 10 kg of weight.

The animal used to test the Riders is a horse provided by the government for testing purposes. This animal is different from the one that will be used in the routes themselves, as the test is purely meant to test the stamina of the Rider.

Skill Requirements

Although there is no regulation of wing type for Angels working as Couriers, an Angel is far more likely to pass the tests required if they have high-speed type wings. For "Riders", they must be able to adequately ride and control a horse or other mount, such as a mule or a donkey.

Other Requirements

Rider-type Couriers must provide their own mount or pay a fee of 1 gold piece per month to rent a mount.

Equipment

Each Courier is equipped with a special, pocketed backpack which carries their alloted mail to be delivered. This backpack allows for up to 10 kg of weight to be evenly spread across the back in a way that makes the weight feel like far less than it is.

Payment

Direct Reimbursement

Couriers are paid each week with their allotment of gold based on the week's work. Their pay is determined by how many hours of work they completed, with the exchange rate being from 2 silver pieces per hour of work to 1 gold piece per hour of work. 2 silver pieces per hour is a relatively low wage, but, with health insurance paid for and a reduced rent, it is plenty to live off of for a new courier.

Benefits

Couriers recieve the same benefits as low-ranking government officials. Their healthcare is nearly completely paid for, they recieve reduced housing rates, and they have a low-cost life insurance program.
