Saluët Settlement in Deia | World Anvil

Saluët

"In the cold North, it was built, high upon a hill in the Northern sunlight. Those hands who made it, in their vanity, wanted it so, as to be a mighty city upon a hill, and beacon of their truth and rebellion to those who exiled them from hallowed halls under the sacred arches."
~The Account of the Cities of Mëria

Demographics

Primarily Lindish, the ethnicity of humans who trace their lineage to Saxonized tribes of Anglëi (the first race of Men), who occupy a kingdom in Anglëa along the shores of the Bay of Aqua, and North of the

Government

Democratic Aristocracy. Members of the population vote to select members of the city council, usually from the established families who founded the city.

Defences

The city is circled by a stone wall, which had long ago been built by the Sun'Shönai as a fortification against the coming of Ne'ertsos in the War of Blight. There also stands a solitary tower in the middle which leads deep into the ground, where there is a vast subterranean network mirroring the city above.

Industry & Trade

The city trades largely in copper ore extracted from the foothills to the Southwest, and relies most heavily on this to trade for food from further South.

Infrastructure

The city has a functional sewage system, which relies heavily on the slope of the hill to carry waste away from the population. Cobblestone streets are well maintained, but are not wide enough for carriages. Horse traffic is limited to beyond the walls.

History

The founders of the city came to the area from across the seas, from the kingdom of Lindon. They were of an odd cult which claimed worship of the Creator, just as the already established Ecclesia Luminis Dei does, but they do so without any of the iconography or rituals which that Church utilizes. This cult claimed that the Creator's ideal was one of sterility and devoid of anything beyond the most basic designs. As such, the people in the East grew weary of them, and banned their practices in the year 2798 of the Age of Silence, which led to their exile. They deigned to build their new city as a beacon in the bleak and plain tundra of the North, simple and unadorned as their visions; the year was 2806, Age of Silence.

Architecture

The buildings are made from stone, quarried from the Colossal Spine, and wood from the Velkyr Woods to the Southeast. The buildings themselves are plain and simple, not adorned in much beyond what is necessary to make and trap heat in the harsh chill of the North.

Natural Resources

Stone and copper from the foothills and mountains of the Colossal's Spine mountain range. Wood from the Velkyr Woods to the Southeast, collected from vassal towns and villages.
