Haven

Haven 1
Haven in a female Ellum , the apprentice of (The Grass Pope) and a resident of Evergreen .

History

As a child, Haven was brought to Evergreen by her mother to receive protection and training from (The Grass Pope). Haven had demonstrated Ellum powers related to grass/nature from infancy, and (the Grass Pope) was the only well-known Ellum with similar powers at the time. Sometime during Havens childhood, her mother died, leaving her with no known biological family. She was adopted by (the village elder), a kind but conservative woman who instilled her with many positive values, but many biases as well. This stood in contrast to (The Grass Pope) was extremely tough in Haven's training, but had more liberal ideas about the world and encouraged inquiry and rebellion. (The Grass Pope) and (the village elder) served as dual mothers for Haven through much of her early childhood.   All of this changed around Haven's 16th birthday, during the time of the (western famine). During the famine, the combined powers of (The Grass Pope) and Haven had ensured Evergreen still had abundant food. Other settlements began to take notice, and one formed a small army to demand Evergreen give over its Ellum for the purpose of feeding all the settlements struck by the famine. After the army encircled the city and made their demand, the village council met and determined it would ultimately be up to the Ellum to decide for themselves. (The GRass POpe) refused, and after delivering that message to the attacking army, (the village elder) was killed by an arrow meant to be a warning shot.

While (the grass pope) could have prevented this, she purposely put The Village Elder in danger, hoping to gain more control over Haven.
Haven, who had snuck out to watch The Village Elder deliver the message, witnessed her death and became enraged, losing control of her powers. In her out-of-control state, she caused a wall of trees, so close they fused together, encircling the city and blocking out the attacking army entirely - The Great Wood Wall. Havens power also directly struck the archer whose arrow had killed The Village Elder, freezing him in place and encasing him entirely in an ashen tree. This tree retained his face and form in its trunk as it continued to grow, and became known as The Deadwood. The Deadwood stands on what is now the only road into Ellum, serving as a warning to anyone who would attack - and a reminder to Haven of what her powers could do if she were to lose control again.

Chapter 1

As the game begins, Haven has just turned 20, and is about to provide a demonstration to the village elders of her powers, the first step in officially taking over the duties of (the grass pope). After a few days of demonstrations, as well as an interview by the council to determine her judgement and character, Haven is accepted as the next protector of Evergreen. (The Grass Pope) takes advantage of this situation and goes on her first trip away from the village since the attack during the Western Famine. However, while (the grass pope) is gone, the village is attacked, and Haven must decide if she participates in the defence of allows the captain of the guard to take care of it. The attack is fended off, but there's no clear indication of who the attackers were, why they attacked, and how (or if) they knew (the grass pope) was away. When (the grass pope) returns, she sends Haven south to the trading village of (trading village name) to find information about the attackers. Haven learns that the attackers seem to be from the east, across the mountain range that divides the continent in half.   Haven must decide how to handle the situations that arise, and each one has multiple possible solutions. It's ultimately up to her who she trusts, where she goes, and whether she develops her powers in the service of defense... or leaves a train of Dead Wood in her wake.

Powers

Haven begins with a number of simple grass-related powers. She can cause thorn bushes to grow, which serve to slow and slightly damage enemies. She can also cause trees to sprout and grow rapidly, which then can provide cover for some units as well as sniper positions for some archers. She can also seed ground, rapidly transforming mud into far more passable grass.   As she grows in power, she must decide if she's going to specialize in offense or defense. Her possible defensive powers include creating small walls of trees, releasing pollens/toxins that cause temporary blindness, and growing specialized plants which can heal units. Offensively she can create plants that secrete acid, use thorny vines to rip through people, and entomb individuals in Dead Wood. Dead Wood trees made of the corpses of enemies remain a permanent fixture of the battlefield where they were created.
