Kitsune

Basic Information

Anatomy

This species has three forms: a human form, a humanoid fox form, and a fox form.  The fox form is larger than normal foxes.  They are very good at leaping and climbing.

Genetics and Reproduction

The female is only fertile in the fall and then only if she is in a secure location.  Reproduction and birth happens in the humanoid fox form.

Growth Rate & Stages

Babies are born in the humanoid fox form.  They remain in that form until about two years of age, when their first shift occurs, into the human form.  Involuntary shifts into the humanoid form may occur from time to time, but the form is not held long.  When puberty occurs, between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, the first shift to fox form will occur.  Learning to shift back to human teaches the kitsune voluntary transformation.   The development of subsequent tails takes many years to develop, often between 80 to 100 years and often requires some traumatic event.

Ecology and Habitats

Kitsune are highly adaptable, like foxes, and can survive in a variety of habitats.  Arctic kitsune prefer tundra regions.  Desert kitsune prefer savannas and deserts.  Most kitsune, however, live in forest environments.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kitsunes are omnivorous subsisting on small mammals, plant life, and fish.

Biological Cycle

Some kitsune have fur/hair that changes color with the seasons, lightening to white or nearly white in the winter and darkening to red, brown or black in the summer.
