Physical Description

The Fire of the Deep is a small, translucent red stone that is warm to the touch. As time passes while the stone is in someone’s possession, it grows hotter and hotter. Within ten minutes, it burns the skin; within thirty, it causes third-degree burns. It cannot be fooled as to its ownership; it burns through any bag or container that one might keep it in. The only way to stop it is to get rid of the stone, ideally to return it to salt water.

Creation Stories

A Power Greater than Death

Adlet, the Goddess of Death, exists in all pantheons. She originated in the Pantheon of Old Gods, of which she is the only one remaining, for the only thing that cannot die is Death itself. In an attempt to circumvent this, the other Old Gods created a power “greater than Death,” but that power became too much for any one God to hold, and subsequently too much for them all to hold together, and it consumed them. That power is in the Fire of the Deep.

Heart of Hatred

A man was so consumed by his hatred and desire for vengeance that these emotions manifested physically in his heart. Over time, then, his heart burned him from the inside out, killing him with is own hatred. The Fire of the Deep is his heart, the only part of his body left.

Heart of the Ocean

This item was once the Heart of the Ocean. When the God of the Ocean found it, he knew that it was the only thing that belonged to the Ocean more than he did—more than he ever could—and so in his grief and anguish and distress, he cast it onto land and cursed it so that anyone who touched it would hurt like he did.
