Among the Stars
Palak stormed down the corridor. He was in a foul mood. Two Sergal fighters had been allowed to strafe his ship without so much as one of them being blown up. It was a direct insult to his honor and that of the Anvil of Dawn. He planned to have words with his point defense teams about it later. Right now, however, he needed to calm down, lest he tear them to pieces with his claws.
His wings twitched in agitation as he fumed. As a member of House Obsidian he was held to many higher standards than other Imperial captains, and being the Consort of the Crown Prince, well those expectations were even higher. A lesser drake would have collapsed under the pressure, but Palak had practically been raised as one of the royal family. He was used to the intrigue and posturing that came with being near those in power.
But he had risen to the rank of Warmaster on his own merits. None could say differently. Despite being the Consort, he had not seen the Crown Prince for nearly a millennium; nor had anyone else. The Crown Prince had left to conduct his own affairs of state almost 1000 years ago, and had not been heard from since. It was only because the Emperor maintained a psychic link with his progeny that allowed him to know whether or not they were alive that Prince Drakkon had not been declared legally dead. And so he had the status, but no one to back him up for it. His climb up the ladder was one of constant fighting for what he had already earned and justifying his positions with action above and beyond what was expected of others.
It was in this context that he felt his rage, his righteous anger, beginning to get the better of him. Not only had his ship been attacked unprovoked, but he had not even captured one of the enemy pilots to use as a bargaining chip against the Federation, to humiliate as he turned them over to their government for whatever debriefing they would suffer. The Sergal were not known to be gentle with those who failed. Palak was beginning to see the wisdom in that position.
