The Maelstrom
The sky may look calm, the serene blue in the day is a trick of the eye. The light from the sun shows so brightly that it reflects the blue of the great seas up into the highest layer of the firmament. Only when the sun slips away can the true nature of our prison can be seen.
The world is encapsulated by a ferocious permanent storm. The black rolling clouds are riddled with flashes of lightning. Protruding from this hellish expanse are the planets. all of the planets are unimaginably large orbs floating in The Maelstrom, we can only see the bottom of these huge spheres as they puncture the layer of clouds.
Yes we all know that the Sun is stationary and always appears at the most northern point in the mornings and fades away at dusk. The Moon mirrors the sun appearing at the southern point at dusk staying similarly stationary. Many of you can name the most common planets during the day we can watch Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury follow their seasonal paths through the sky. The most common night planets Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn at night have the very predictable paths. However, did you know, before the cataclysm there was a planet called Pluto floating in the sky? A small cluster of shining bits grouped together is all that remains.
What are these planets? Some cultures believe they are not spheres but disks and that the tops side of these disks are inhabited by intelligent beings. Some believe they are actually portals traversing to other planes of existence. Some are certain these are the home worlds of the old gods. Many cultures use the movement patterns to predict changes in the seasons, and some cultures believe the secret to a persons behavior and personality are tied to the pattern of the planets at the time of their birth.
Before the cataclysm it is known there were flying ships, and though they were not common, at least a few records persist that every attempt to sale up to the Maelstrom was wrought with destruction. Rumors/legends persist that one flying ship did make it, the same legendary ghost ship people whisper about even today...but, that is just a myth.
