King/Queen of Ashtree
The royal family uses this as the title of the monarch that is in absolute control of the kingdom. The king or queen cannot pass a law without first consulting the Royal Council and the monarch's viziers. The Council can then make a decision on whether or not to allow it, or to suggest a change that might benefit the people. Otherwise, their rule is absolute. There has only been one overthrow of a tyrannical King Gromir II that ended up changing the bloodline, since his only family (a nephew) became the king.
Appointment
Whenever there is a ceremony to crown a new monarch, the nobles get excused from military duty for an entire week. Not very coincidentally, this is the time most serf uprisings and bandit/orc raids happen.
Duties
Making laws that are fair and just, always consulting your viziers and the Royal Council, as well as keeping the power of the other nobles in check.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Though abdication is a possible method, and it is in fact advised, this is an absolute monarch we're talking about. There has only been one uprising against the king himself, and that was without a formal abdication. All that had to happen was for members of the Royal Council to switch sides and join the serfs and vassals of the land. Even the free peasants in rural settlements rose up, too. It only took a few months of attrition for King Gromir's head to be mounted upon a pike.
