Side Stories - Jesse and Sean Get Into the Record Biz

General Summary

Shillelagh had mentioned to Tommy that the crew was looking to make money and so he takes them up on the offer. With the situation of someone out actively gunning for his boss, to say he is busy is an understatement. He shows up at the garage to find Jesse and Shillelagh there and hands them a box of 45 rpm records with the simple instructions,   "Make sure this record is in the number 1 spot in every jukebox in Back of the Yards and Canaryville" When they ask if there is anything that they should know about in particular, Tommy mentions,   "Oh yah, at Debi's Diner don't bother with the juke in booth 12." After requesting details, he explains further, "I don't know, some fucking kid wrapped his car around a tree down in Calumet or something like that. Anyway, ever since he and his girlfriend have decided to spend eternity listening to their last tune at Debi's. Now...if you guys are crazy, you can try to change the record. Actually, there is a pot out there and your cut would be about 12 scharole if you could pull it off."   Simple enough and they 'borrow' Slicks' car that night. The first night is pretty boring. Most of the joints already have the record, Bobby Balino sings the Ballads (wich the pair decides kind of sucks after giving it a listen) in the number one spot and those that don't are not an issue. Once the owner of the establishment sees that they are carrying a box of records, they give them a wide berth.   On the second night it is pretty much the same thing until they get to Rusty's, a dive bar popular with some of the rougher residents near the stockyards. While things get tense, they flash some heaters and eventually get the owner and his cronies to back down and they swap out the record with out further issue. The rest of the evening is uneventful, but they do make sure to take some time to gather some intel on the Joe Bagels situation.   On the final night, they take the time to stop by Jesse's mom's shop as they make their way through Little Mexico. She takes him in the back and asks for a favor. Las Brujas (she would never use that term, but everyone else calls them that) has noticed...or sensed...something...unusual in the neighborhood to the southwest. She asks her son to investigate and let them know what he finds. Jesse immediately agrees before asking for his own favor, something to help ward off two teenage spirits. She isn't too happy with the idea of her son and his gringo friend messing with two ghosts, but she relents and gives them a special talisman made out of a cross and embued with special powers.   Later that night they end up at Debi's and after replacing the records in all the other jukeboxes, they make their way down to booth 12. The patrons, waitress and grouchy-ass cook all get as far away as possible as they get ready for a show. Once they approach the table, the jukebox kicks on and starts playing a sad early 40s tune. As the duo prepares and tunes their plan, the record starts over several times each time it reaches the end and they can see the spirits of the two sitting across from each other. Ready, Shillelagh lies down on his back and slides under the table and compels the spirits upward. Lightbulbs burst, the jukebox goes hairwire and the forms of the two spirits are smeared across our reality and towards the ceiling. As they do everything they can to get back into their booth, Jesse slides in and swaps out the records - he replaces the top one with Balino's Ballads and moves the teenagers' record to the second spot. Jesse is hammered by the spirits as they lash out at anything but he manages to do the swap before collapsing. Shillelagh releases the spirits, helps up Jesse and they retreat to the other end of the diner to see what happens. It takes them a few minutes, but the spirits figure out that their song is now in the number two spot and they begin playing it. Over and over.   Unable to walk under his own power, Shillelagh drives Jesse back to his mom's. The women take him into the back and give a call to a mysterious religious figure who shows up and prays over the him, easing his pain to a point that is at least bearable.   By the time they get back to Tommy, the story has already made its way around the neighborhood. The pair is now low key famous for having replaced the record in Johnny and Jenny's booth and he says he will put in a good word for them with Joe Bagels.   In Other News
Janet, Jesse's favorite whore, is questioned by Det. Carmike. She doesn't reveal anything important, but the dogged detective seems to be getting closer.
