1 - 5 Turning Up the Heat

General Summary

Have you heard the one about the two bored Irishmen...

Tuesday starts out with a bang. Sean steps out of the garage to find some dumb kid sticking a gun in his face. Before long he is chained up in the garage being quesioned vigourously. It appears he is just Stan's cousin and is looking for some revenge. Legend has it, his body made it all the way down the Chicago river and canal before being pulled out of the Illinois by some LaSalle County sheriff.

Later in the week, Tommy is stopped at the light at 51st and Racine when the redneck in a couple cars in front of him decides to start beating on his woman. Jumping out of his car and into Tommy's, Nora Jean introduces herself as Tommy peels out with her hanging out the window. The redneck's souped up '42 is no match for Tommy's knowledge of the back streets of New City and before long he is trying to figure out what to do with Nora Jean, Georgian expat who just found herself homeless. He decides to take her to Chris who convinces Nora Jean that her initial distaste at his business is misguided and after he explains the amount of money that can be made, Nora Jean dips her toes into the world of Southside prostitution.

One day, Pete is at the garage, he is fascinated by the heroin operation being a big fan of alchemy and chemistry, and mentions that word on the street is that the Halsted Boys are making some moves. Apparently Chris has gained full control of the gang and his first order of business was to clip Matt from the Backyard Bulls. Now, rumor has it that he is planning on taking back Halsted St.

Not liking the sounds of any of this, it takes the McGregor brothers a bit to come to an agreement on the proper course of action to respond to this apparent rising threat. At first, kicking in Chris' front door and shooting him in the face sounds like the the best approach. After realizing how much work something like that would be, the brothers decide something more along the lines of taking over O'Toole's Corner Market is more reasonable. With the rest of the gang being MIA, the pair didn't have to bother with all that pesky planning and bullshit and they grabbed some shotguns and hopped in the car.

While O'Toole's backdoor is sturdy, the lock fails immediately to a shotgun blast. Sean finds Patty O'Toole in his office just as the H Boys' muscle come bursting into the store room to investigate the commotion. The one looks down to the billy club in his hand and then back up to the double barrel shotgun and .45 Tommy is casually waving around and quickly decides being shot to death in the dry goods store room of O'Toole's is not something he is interested in. As Sean takes Patty back into his office to discuss new business proposals, Tommy escorts the H Boys' muscle out. The group of old ladies examining cabbages show their appreciation that someone is doing something about those horrible thugs (because Tommy spent the previous day walking around the blocks telling all the old ladies how horrible those thugs at O'Tooles are) and Betsy the cashier casually gets out of the way of any trouble.

Tommy returns to the office to find an exacerbated Sean trying to explain to Patty that he is the one that is holding the shotgun and is therefore the one that should be giving the orders. The brothers decide to switch from a gun-in-your-mouth-Boss approach to some Schmoozing and Juicing and the dam breaks. They are able to tie into the grumpy old Irishman's pride and frustration and before long they don't just have a compliant victim, they have an enthusiastic pattern.

So, the Southside Sinners now have an official business front. Patty O'Toole handles all the paperwork and what-not. In addition to reducing 2 heat every downtime, O'Toole's Corner Grocer is now their place to hang out, meet, etc.

They go back to the garage to share the good news of their exploits to find Chris there and he is enraged,
"Did you hear what those motherless fucks just did??!?"

"Who Chris? What's going on?

"Those motherless fucks that work for the H Boys! They went down to Backstreet Tavern and Marge's Market and took the place back! They raped and beat up my best goddamn who-are I had just set up above the bar!!!"
As the McGregor boys were occupied taking over the H Boys' business front and the rest of their gang was fucking off, the H Boys were simultaneously taking over the Sinners' turf and the Five Four's new business.

Flashbacks
You can't "undo" things with flashbacks. So, when we used a flashback to make the wiseguy disappear from the market, that was not correct. You can't change "he is there" to "he is not there". You can't 'undo' or 'change' the fiction with a flashback, you can only alter or add to it.
